Henry 45 X model and 315gr Slammers.......

Post by fortyshooter » Wed May 10, 2023 6:32 pm

Had some of these 45 Colt 315 gr. Slammers from MB I had loaded couple years ago and wanted to try them in my 45 Colt Henry Carbines.
However before any range test I had to see if they would cycle what with a 1.655 COL and a wide almost full wadcutter shape. I found that they
would cycle in my X Model smoothly after a slight chamfer cut around nose of bullet but would not cycle at all in my older CCH 45 Colt Henry that is a tube loader only...the round would just jam up and had to remove the lever to get it out.
So off to the range with the X for some test. Had two different loads of Alliant 2400....16 and 17 grains. Got some speeds of the loads at 1215 for the 16 gr. load and 1290's for the 17 gr. load. From 25 yds I fired 6 shots from standing position and had a nice group. Then stepped back to 40 yds. trying to see the top small red dot on target. Two shots near the small dot I really could not see well. Not bad.
Then shot a few on my 8 inch swing plates from about 35 yds. and those 315 gr. Hammers do hit hard with the plate almost swinging completely around and these are heavy 3/8ths AR500 steel.
A lonely cement block happened to be near so got back about 20 yds and took a shot. You can see from the picture it got hammered good!

Only downside was at 1200 FPS with the lighter 16 gr. load it wasn't that quiet thru the suppressor and will adjust a load down to the 1000 FPS zone for quiet use. The barrel bore looked clean with just some powder or bullet coating residue and will be loading up more of these.

I'm sure they are hard hitters, I know how hard the 310 gr 44's do.

Forty, could you chuck your mold into your lathe and shave that chamfer on the mold? That seems to me an easier way to modify those bullets. YMMV!

Well... first you have to have a mold! These bullets come from Missouri Bullets and I have some coming. I had loaded these a good while back and it was a sample pack. No big deal chamfering with a file. Just chuck up the loaded round in lathe and hit it with the file and it is a quick job.
The jaws on the chuck have a couple of relief grooves that just clear the case head and you just snug up on the case.
