Cats and dogs.......

Post by fortyshooter » Tue Apr 25, 2023 9:14 am

In my neighborhood and most likely everybody else cats run wild. Several on my street drive ol' Buster crazy when he can't run them down so to stop the constant barking he has to come back in the house.
Down at my range property several dogs mostly of the hunting breed are let loose to run wild and lately mostly what I get on my trail cameras other than a few deer at night. In this part of the county it is still legal to let the dogs run wild and wasn't a problem until new folk moved into a couple of new homes along the road.
Last week my neighbor Dave gave me couple ears of dried field corn so I hooked them to a long dead limb and suspeneded it across two trees with corn hanging couple feet off the ground in direct view of trail cam. Wanted to see what critters might do with it.
So while at the range yesterday I checked that cam and found 22 videos on it and the limb with corn was on the ground but corn not eaten.
Went thru the videos where some deer at night didn't mess with it and was hoping to see a raccoon have fun with it. Get to a video showing 4 hounds standing there looking stupid at the camera but no sign of the limb or corn. Yep the dang dogs had got to it.
2-3 years ago had more wildlife video with lots of fox, raccoons and turkeys among the deer but no dogs on my cams and lately my buddy Dave tells me he hears barking dogs all night long around his place.

Yep cats and dogs depending where you live!

Dogs are not allowed to run wild here. A few years back a pack of dogs started killing
farm animals including some horses. Farmers are now allowed to shoot them on sight.
We do have some feral cats but they usually perish in the Winter.
We do have lots of wild life however. I have a trail cam set up in the yard and we
have a red fox who has been here several years. We see her a lot in the yard. Oh
yeah, she raises kits each year which usually end up dead on the highway. :(

Not much has changed around here thru the years. If someone's dog is chasing cows, tell him and he takes care of the dog,and dog is not seen again. If owner don't take care of the dog, the farmer does, and the dog is never seen again. No questions asked.

I haven’t seen a single feral cat or dog here at home. Occasionally I’ll see a dog along the state road. A lot of folks here have barn cats and cattle or hunting dogs.
