410 Day

Post by graywolf » Tue Mar 07, 2023 8:37 am

Maybe not a good range report without pictures, but it was late afternoon, and switching things around, I was running out of daylight. I shot the Rossi Turkey with XF choke, Mossberg 410 Turkey, F and XF choke, and Henry 410x with F and XF chokes. At 15,20, and 25 yds. 7-1/2 size shot. All was pretty consistent with each other, but the Rossi and Henry was a little better than the Mossberg.

I get decent results out of my mossberg 410 turkey at 30 yards with 3"tss. My Henry single shots will take 3" shells, but with no rear sight I trust the mossy more. And my Henry lever won't take 3" shells. Huge difference between tss and lead.

I haven't shot tss. Heard all good things about it. Be honest, the price, and since I don't turkey hunt anymore, I probably want buy any. My Grandson uses it turkey hunting. He loves it. I tell you, that Rossi to be the cheapest of the bunch, holds its own.

Good testing........I several 410's but my life long turkey gun is and will be my raggedy Rem stubby barreled 870 with with Win. Longbeard lead #4's. It gts the job done up close and way out there. Shells are cheaper too.

Sounds like a fun time, I did a little 410 test back last Oct.
Of the 4 I own the Mossy out performed the others.
There should be a report on here back a few pages.

My one and only 410 shooter is on the way back for a new hammer.....yes the Bond Arms derringer. Do I really need a Henry 410 shooter?

The main thing to remember is it only has the 2 1/2" chamber.
All of mine have the 3" chamber, so they'll shoot both.

I had a 410 day yesterday. Two eastern gray squirrels and one rat.
Mossberg 500e, Federal .410 3".

Agreed, that’s my only negative on my Henry 410. Particularly right now with the very limited availability of 410 ammo.

The Rossi and the Mossy. You’d have to be in the mood for arguing to fuss over which patterned better. Pretty close. Only difference that makes it not be completely even is the Rossi has XF choke and the Mossy Full. Top two are Rossi.

Here’s why I don’t shoot larger than 7.5’s much. Don’t get a good pattern with 6’s. May just be the brand. Haven’t compared brands. Suppose it could be worse.

Good info on the 6’s. I use them for grouse but I had better do a pattern test like you did.

I have part of a box of 4's. If I remember right, at 20 yds, they were pretty thin. That was WW's also. When I went to 410's ten years ago, I was gonna shoot 6's like I always did with 12 gauge. The WW never patterned better than the picture above, but Remingtons patterned better. I got a box of Remingtons I need to dig out and shoot to compare. I been shooting Rio 7.5 and 8's mostly, and really like them.

I have some Rio shells for the .410. They seem to do well when I've used them.
