I will be going back and looking at all the photos this morning.

Since I was a commercial photographer I am judging the photos by how well they would lend themselves to commercial work. Imagine these in print with company logos and information placed around the objects. Many were not the highest quality in regards to pixels but I felt the photographer got the best picture possible with the equipment they had.

I have selected these in no particular order and at this point all are equal. This is how most contests are judged. The judges each pick out a set number of pictures and then re-judge them picking a final winner.

All the votes are in and counted: I thought the contest was a success. Overall they reminded me of old Weaver Scope ads from the 50's, 60's and 70's. So I thought I would judge them from the cameras and printing of the times.

Most of the votes were for the picture of two rifles up against some rocks submitted by Jon4ta. It was the best quality picture in terms of focus and resolution but it also had a great composition keeping your eyes inside and not leading them to an edge. The rifle buttstock and barrels came close to the edges but did not let you escape. The rock complimented the rifles and did not compete with them.

Second place was for my favorite of the rifle on the fence taken by Coach. This is a simple composition but lends itself well for a print ad with written information. The barrel leads you out but the fence leads you back. But I would have liked to see another two inches in front of the barrel and one inch less in the buttstock. Rifles are like people and you need some lookin' room in front of them.

Third place was by RanchRoper and somehow didn't make it into the first lineup. Sorry to say this is one of the worst quality pictures but that is what makes me like it. It is like I'm viewing in on a TV set from the 60's. "So come on down to Cowboy Bob's Feed Store"

It was really hard to judge this contest because if any publisher needed a newsprint quality picture they could have used almost all submitted. And certainly all those that made the first cut were sure prints.
