Long Ranger in 308

Post by Sir Henry » Mon Feb 06, 2023 8:33 am

I don’t really have a suitable deer hunting rifle after selling most of my collection before moving to Wisconsin. I’ve been searching for a Long Ranger but haven’t stumbled across one. I think I need to wander into my LGS and order one.

I would order one without sights and put a scope on it to cover 25 to 100 yards. I doubt I would take a shot beyond that. If I was in the Big Sky Country of Montana I might think different. What scope would you recommend?

Ohh boy; might be a LOT of opinions/answers on this one. Burris Full Field II 3-9x40 would fill the bill. But, at that range, a fixed 4x would work just as well. Thinking NCG will have some ideas here.

Edit: Not fixed 4x, but, close: Sightron S1 1.75-5x32.[$239]. Leupold vx-Freedom 1.5-4x20[299], Both at cameralandny.com

I’m a little partial to Leupolds. And I’m thinking of one with an AO.

Leupold's have a large market, no doubt. Gene, at the distance you desribed, don't think an AO is needed. Look at cameralandny.com and ask for Doug. That fella knows his optics.

Gene, I put a Burris Veracity scope with Signature Z rings on my Savage .308, but wanted to reach out a little further than 100 yards. I purchased them from Europtic.com

I have an old Nikon 3X9 on my old Browning BLR 308 that has worked really well since the mid '60's .... it is reported to be the inspiration for the Long Ranger .... for a hundred yards or so, a 3X9 in whatever brand you prefer would be worth considering

Burris for me. As far as Im concerned they are just as good as a Leupold and better price. One other advantage for myself is the warranty there factory is 8 miles from my house. That being said I have quite a few of there scopes and like them.

Al, I have a Burris of some sort on one of the t-4's that has held up quite well.
It's a 3-9 x ? I can't remember and that one is way back in the safe. ;)

I put a Leopold V3xi 3.5-10x40 on my Long Ranger. It's good for the yardage you're interested in and a bit beyond.

Thanks. It sounds like a winner.
