Mid winter check-up

Heading up to the cabin tomorrow for a check up to see if anything needs to be fixed or taken care of before spring. I will also take the appropriate gun/s in case any bears are lounging around. Just a day trip with no surprises, I hope.

Amen...it's been too long since I did. Hopefully, she'll want to stay long enough for me to do so. The fact that we are even going is a big plus though.

It's likely to be a pretty quick turn around and hopefully will set the stage for next season...Ya know what I mean?

Do you have to do any winterizing to your cabin? I remember helping my uncle with his a few times. Had to turn off, disconnect and drain the water line. It only had running cold water to a kitchen sink so that was pretty easy. He had cut many poles to the proper length to brace the roof rafters from the inside. The cabin was high enough in the Cascades (at Lake Wenatchee for those that know WA state) that 4 or 5 feet of snow was pretty normal. More than that and it would have to be shoveled off. No modern heat, a wood cooking stove in the kitchen and a big pot bellied stove in the main room.

Yes, we winterize no later than the first week of November. It gets pretty brutal up there in the winter. We also have a hot tub on the side porch that I'm very protective of...I love it, but it too requires TLC.
We are lucky, in that we are within 2 hrs drive from our permanent residence to the cabin, however, the drive up there is seldom easy. DOT is in the process of rebuilding the main hwy, (I 26) and it is a nightmare.
We have a local company, (up there) do the open and close for us so that they are responsible for any plumbing issues.

Thanks Hatch. We'll be leaving in about a half hour. It's only about a 1+1/2 to 2 hr. drive. I hear you about the snow damage. A lot falls up there. 2 years ago we had a gutter torn off. When we replaced the roof 3 years ago with metal, they didn't install any snow breaks, ( or whatever you call them ). The heavy snow slid down and tore the gutter off. . Still trying to get someone up there to do repairs and install the snow breaks. Trying to get contractors to go up there is not easy, to say the least.
The potential of a bear encounter would not be uncommon either. Hopefully they're all sleeping. Just not in the living room.
