Treed by coyotes

Grandson texted just after dark yesterday and said coyotes had him treed in his deer stand. Told him I’d ride back on UTV to check on him. Said take my time he was gonna try to get a shot at one. He mostly bow hunts. I was able to get close enough on 4- wheeler to run them off.

One of the reasons I ALWAYS carry a sidearm when hunting. Of course, local regs may preclude your grandson from doing so.

I am a little surprised they were that bold. Around here they are pretty shy. I've wondered when we are going to have an attack on a small child. FYI they are an invasive species in my state. Brought in by some group years back and they "escaped".

Coyotes are everywhere now and more in the cities than you would think. They follow the human trash trail !

I've never seen them that bold either, they usually run as soon as they spot ya.
I don't bow hunt, but like clovis said, If I did I'd be carrying a side arm.
To bad he didn't at least get one of them, because I can tell you I would've at least tried.

There is a video online of a coyote in a surburban neighborhood grabbing a toddler on the offside of a vehicle in the driveway. Dad runs around as the coyote starts to drag his daughter toward the sidewalk. He grabs his child and when the coyote darts back toward then he throws the water bottle he's holding at it and off it runs.

That coyote had plans for the baby. The animals are going as crazy as the people out there. Near the end another one was on the same street soon after this incident. Maybe the same one.
They should set traps or have professionals hunt them down.

We have a large number of the sly devils here. It would take professionals to trap them. We put a live injured hen in a large animal trap, with a game cam watching it. There were multiple coyotes that approached, circled the trap, stuck a nose in either open end, but not one entered. We finally had to stop free ranging the chickens.

They raise cain behind the house every night. Every now and then I'll see one come out into to yard, but they usually stay just inside the woods line. I've had them follow me out of the woods after dark from deer hunting lots of times. I used to do a good bit of predator calling, fox, bobcat and crows.I bought a really good electronic call about 3 years ago and so far only called crows with it. I been saying I am gonna start trying to call coyotes.

We have the call, and I bought an accurate bolt gun just for that; then broke my wrist and suffered nerve damage during the surgery. Finally getting to where I can shoot long guns again, perhaps it's time to give em a try.

There’s a crick 1/2 mile from the back of the house, several different packs must have dens along the crick. They got to yapping at night and don’t quit till daylight. SD’s state animal, one nickname state has is the “coyote state” and Univ of SD’s mascot is the coyote.

Both VA and OK classify them as varmints, no permit needed on the farm for varmints, and no seasons, as long as you don't plan to sell the hides.

Here they are an invasive species. DNR is practically begging hunters to take them, along with the feral hogs.

Feral hogs are invasive in OK too, we are just lucky in our immediate area. Just a few miles away, they are dealing with their destructive nature.

South Carolina classifies them as invasive species, encourage land owners to eradicate. no license no bag limit day or night, if given the opportunity I'll perform my civic duty

The only restriction at night here, (For Coyotes,) is that you can only use a shotgun, and no shot larger than #4. but, no restrictions on HOGS, so the wardens have been pushing to remove the restrictions on night shooting Coyotes as long as the farmers / hunters shoot responsibly like they do with hogs. I have the Shotgun set up with a Red Dog and a Mounted Light, and a Long Slide Glock 35 set up with a light. Coyotes prowling the Coop or the Barn will get greeted. (We have a Cow ready to drop a new calf any day.) A neighbor had a young heifer killed by a pack of coyotes last month while she was lying down cleaning her freshly dropped calf. The coyotes then dragged off the newborn.

I frequently hear coyotes up the road but never see them around my property. I've almost always had goats but they've never bothered them, maybe they are deterred by the electric fence. Also when I had pygmy goats they were with my horse and I don't know if coyotes would take on a full grown horse.

I was up at my friend's diesel shop this afternoon and a guy I know who shoots scores of coyotes every Winter
stopped in. He said that folks have been seeing a sow bear with a cub around our lake and wondered if I had
seen her. I have not but they did tear down my bird feeders last Fall. Also neighbors have been seeing a wolf
lately.
He gathers road kills which he puts in the field behind his house and then shoot the yotes out his kitchen window.

Sometimes one or two will step out, then go back in woods. I don’t usually cut close to the woods late in afternoon. I don’t think they would do anything, but why give them a chance.

Back when we cows and I cut hay I usually had the Ruger Single-six, and all the years I only had one opportunity at one.
Large field with a small grove of trees up on one end of the field, with a fence row 60-70 yds away on one side.
As I was coming around the south end there was one that came out of the grove headed towards the fence.
But I barely cleared leather by the time it was gone.

They just aren't that bold right around here, not yet anyway.
I did take a shot at one trotting across a field the other day with the 41 BBS, pretty sure I shot over the blame thing.
