Reading Glasses.

I have to use reading glasses to read. When aiming with open sights, the sights are blur and target is clear. If I put reading glasses on, it’s just the opposite. After several shots trying both ways, seems everything is blur. I don’t want to, but is going to a scope the only solution. Any suggestions.

I had the same problem. I scoped my BBS 357 shortly after I purchased it for that reason. I would have liked to stay with the iron sites but, I had to face reality. I stayed as small as I could on the scope. ( A small Weaver 1-3x20) which IMO is adequate for the rifle. It HAS proven to be just that. I wear progressive lenses, however, they don't help when shooting. In retrospect, I maybe should have tried a red dot instead of the scope. You might consider that as well.

Optometrist. Find one that is familiar with shooting sports and make an appointment, if you want to continue with open sights. My scores in my 600 point ppc match went up twenty points when I went to prescription shooting glasses.

Don, I believe Mark meant to type 1-3x20mm Weaver scope. I have the same one on my Henry .357 BB Classic. I need optics on my rifles.
If you can locate one, buy it. You won't regret it.

I also have this issue, reading glasses to read and distance glasses to drive. I broke a dozen pair taking them on and off 50 times a day. Went with progressive lenses this year and like them. The best (scopeless) compromise I've found was going with peep sights, put them on the golden boy and 357 all weather and shoot fine.

Yep a peep or ghost ring along with a slightly wider front sight works well for me right now. I just run around with 1.5 readers all the time.
With a notch type sight wider is better for me letting more space around the front sight blade otherwise it is all blur.

After my eyes went, I gave up on iron sights and scoped my most often used rifles.

I've been doing everything to avoid scopes, because I just don't like them. Especially on lever guns. Time and old age are starting to convince me this is the only way to go.

Before I ended up with progressives, I would use a pair of readers. I bought the lowest diopter that would allow me to easily focus on the front sight. Rather than bring my Henry into Walmart, I just estimated the distance with my hand outstretched and used that point to focus on in the store. I found that they were about a half diopter lower than what I would use to read with.

Basic optics dictate that only one of the three will be in focus. The front sight, the rear sight, or the target. The front sight is what you want in focus. Being outdoors in bright light will help, as the eye stops down giving you greater depth of field. That means the target and the front sight will be a little less fuzzy.

Those readers worked out well for me. YMMV

My readers are 2.00. I had thought about trying a pair of 1.50’s. I may check on a peep sight, but it may be time to admit I need a scope. Maybe a red dot.

Don't feel bad. I was up to 2.75 readers before I gave up.

I have worn glasses since elementary school and contacts since jr. high. As I aged my glasses turned into progressives, I hate wearing glasses and so I put my contacts in when I wake up and take them out at bedtime. Last 15 years my contacts have been what is called multifocals so I can see far and read also, this works well for shooting.
