when hunting with a centerfire rifle/pistol, how many rounds do you take into the woods with you ? ....


for me :

my hunting pistol is a Ruger 44 Redhawk .... I carry 6 in the revolver and two 6 round speed loaders in a belt pouch

all of my hunting rifles but one carry 5 rounds (1 in the chamber and 4 in the clip/magazine/tube)

the exception is our Henry BBS 44 Mag which can carry 10 rounds, I'll probably carry it full with no spare rounds (could use some in the speed loaders if needed)

I guess it would depend on where you are and the amount of danger posed. Snakes, bears, gators, Illegal marijuana growers, moonshiners ??

With the Remington 760 Gamemaster .30-06, fully loaded with five, either 150 or 180 grain Remington Core-Lokt. I usually carry ten extra rounds.
With either of my Marlin .44 magnums, I only load them with four rounds at most, sometimes three, Remington 240 grain or Hornady LEVERevolution 225 grain. I usually carry ten extra rounds.

I hunt hogs here in SC. I probably enjoy getting out in the woods more than filling the freezer. Which is a good thing given my track record.

I carry my BB steel with a full 10 rounds. I also carry the rest of the box in my backpack. Since there are feral hogs in the woods, I carry a sidearm with 17 rounds.

When I carry my bolt action Savage, I carry 5 in the mag, and another 15 in my backpack. I don't think I will ever need to reload in the field. Having said that, if I get a shot and miss, I will probably top back up, because I can.

When grouse hunting, I carry ten extra rounds of bird shot and two each of buck and slug. You never know what you will encounter. When grouse hunting in the adirondacks, I use a 20 gauge Remington 870 with an 18 1/2 " bbl cylinder bore. It swings faster than a bird barrel. Not that the birds need to worry much.

I usually always have sometype of handgun with an extra reload.

Sometimes you have to plug a shot gun to limit 3 rds, and many rifles are limited to 3, 5 or 10 rd magazines. No limit to what you can carry, to my knowledge, though.

I usually carry about 20 to 30 extra .22s for small game. With the centerfire, a full mag and 5 to 10 extra.

Years ago, I went squirrel hunting with a friend, he had a 1022. The whole day, he carried a fanny pac with a brick of .22s

I do not hunt and I am not an expert but many states do limit how many rounds you can have in your firearm while hunting and the type of gun (Shotgun, rifle or handgun.), rifle or handgun caliber plus the barrel length of your handgun, and/or shotgun gauge that you can use when hunting too. Bow and arrow season and black powder season are different in many states too.

It is different in Montana for some types of hunting compared to the Great Lakes area where I used to live with my late husband, he and I did not hunt but we had some friends who did hunt there, and on the East Coast where I was born (NY) and raised (MD). They were into shotguns big time.

Prairie dog hunting I have shot more than 600 rounds in a day. When I go out for a few days of cruising around the prairie and blasting varmints I keep the amount I could fire if each day is good shooting. Usually went with a total of 3,000 rounds of .223 Remington and 2 or 3 rifles.

I am down to Remington VTR and a Rossi single shot left of the 223s. My grandson of course would loan me the Remington I bought him. The 223 being my favorite prairie dog round has got me really thinking strongly about the "Henry Long Ranger", I think it would make really fun prairie dog gun. If you ever have the chance to prairie dog, do it. You won't be sorry.

The times of being able to shoot so much when prairie dog hunting are being thinned out but on a nice day in the right area you can still get in a lot of shooting. The last time my Grandson and I went we got rained out one of 4 days, had below average luck the next 3 days. And still went through a total of 1200 rounds. I sure hope the cards fall right to go with him next summer.

Varmint depredation is a far different beast than normal hunting. If I went through 600 rounds in a day of deer/hog hunting, I would be doing something seriously wrong.

For years I vacationed in Montana and would visit my Army friend stationed there. We would go shooting prairie dogs with .22LR rifles and would often have a brick or two each in the vehicle but would usually only carry a hundred rounds. My firearm of choice was a 10/22 and I carried four 25-round magazines.
