Alternative powders for Hornady XTP for 45 Colt.
Alternative powders for Hornady XTP for 45 Colt.
Has anyone used True Blue or Unique for the Hornady XTP in 45 Colt? The powders I originally bought for them requires the use of Large Magnum pistol primers which I cannot find anywhere.

Have not tried it with the XTP's, but I shoot a lot of Unique with cast in my 45 colts..
The new Hornady manual shows 6.2-7.4 grs. with the 250 gr. xtp.
Hope that helps.

How about 2400? No need for mag primer.

I use 2400 exclusively

I tried it once. I believe 14.0 or 15.0gr 2400/250gr rnfp. Seemed to shoot pretty darn good, but, a bit sporty in the revolver. Now, i just stick to Unique, Universal or Red Dot. 2400 is for some .357 loads. Have to say Randy, 2400 was accurate out of the Henry.

Probably wouldn't want to try it in the Cimarron,
those old Rugers could handle it.
We all know about 2400 & the 357
Tell ya what I found a nice low recoil load for it in the 444 of all things.
Sorry for the drift.

Unique works okay with the 250 XTP bullet in a rifle where you can gain a bit more speed for bullet expansion. I use 2400 with these in the heavier Ruger BH and Alaskan type revolvers to gain speed but keep the pressure down in the hotter Ruger loads. Look at Power Pistol too as it is just a touch slower burning than Unique and you can gain a bit more bullet speed within standard Colt 45 pressure.
Here is result of the 250 XTP loaded over 8.0 Unique shot out of my Henry X Model 45 with suppressor attached. Speed was below 1100 FPS and expansion was good plus the group is great!

The 45 ACP 230 gr. XTP bullet can work very well too in 45 Colt. This load running within 45 ACP pressure with 9.2 Unique with 45 Colt brass in my S&W Model 25-7. Would work fine in rifle/ carbine at standard pressure.

I too use the 230gr ACP bullet in 45 Colt reloads. 8.2gr Universal was comfortable shooting. I also tied 9.0gr Universal. That was rough on the hand.

That's some mighty good shooting from that X/suppresed .45 Colt forty.

Re: Alternative powders for Hornady XTP for 45 Colt.
I've used True Blue in several different calibers. My Henry .327 Fed Mag really loves it. I've also loaded .44 mag with it as well. It doesn't shoot quite as well in my Marlin as it does in the .327 but it ain't bad either. H110 and 2400 seem to do a bit better. 4227 comes close and really performs well when shooting .44 special. My .44 mag True Blue load is 12.4 gr of powder using a 240 gr Nosler bullet using a CCI 350 primer. I use IMR 4227 in my .45 Colt load with 225 gr XTP and HP-38 with the 250 gr XTP.
