Time to update and refresh the range!

Post by DsGrouse » Wed Aug 31, 2022 12:08 pm

It's been a few years since I updated the range. I've been busy. So, the weather and use wore the backstop and plate hangers down.

How it started

Where it stands today. I've got more prep work to do; then I'm going to shore up the backstop with some pallets. Then fill in the spaces with some wood chips from the local lumber yard.

Good to see a range being refreshed. I'm sure you are looking forward to the future hours of use.

Today's work. Not much height-wise, but the top is about a foot wider on the back side.

I ripped up our old garden boxes to use on the backside as a way to hold more dirt on the backside.

The wire mesh i saved to put over the top of the soil so i can lay it across the top for soil retention.

Some of the additional height. At this point, I have to edge the front of the tractor halfway up to get the bucket up and over.

Nice job restoring the berm area! Yep if you give Mother Nature some time the woods will claim it back. Always some work to do on range property!

Good job, I still have more work to do on mine.
The dirt pile turned into concrete due to triple digit heat and lack of rain.
I'll eventually make mine taller.

I don't look back at the things I can no longer do, I just look forward to the things I still can.

A big issue for me here is how quickly the seasons, and the storms erode the range. I'm trying something new. I've placed the pallets flat side against the range wall. In an effort to break up the water flow as it hits the range. This is only to mitigate that erosion.

The wife and I did some whittling. :P

It is kind of hard to see. We secured the pallets together with some old fencing left on our property.

We dumped our whittle chips,

Chips dumped on the pallets and mesh fencing. Why? I'm hoping the wood chips slow down the moisture before it hits the dirt. I know it will soak up a lot of rainfall. I figure one trailer load every quarter will help me keep the range berm up to snuff.

Tomorrow i will set up my plates and steel. It's going to be fun having a solid range back again.
