Private party sales

Post by GunnyGene » Sat Mar 19, 2022 7:40 pm

People sometimes wonder about buying a gun from a private party via a firearms forum, and whether it's legal or not A little something that's for sale on another forum I frequent, that just came up today. This is a full up real deal sniper system in .308. All the goodies on this baby. And yes, it is legal, and the authorities (State or Federal) will not be involved in any way whatsoever. This is the kind of thing that would disappear if certain people get their way.

Most States it's no problem for now. But that could change. Anyway, this rig is pretty unusual to see on a forum classifieds so just sharing. That Steiner scope retails for over $2600. The seller is a competition shooter down here.

Here in the frozen north it used to just be an honor system of check the other persons license is valid, and then carry on. I believe now we are required to call in to the govt to make sure the other part of the deal isn’t an escaped con etc. I did just get a 16 gauge shotgun today from another private party, but didn’t call it in.

No worries. Apparently Trudeau postponed the house to house confiscation for 18 months.

Yeah, I saw that. I don’t think I can even start to talk about him without getting in trouble here. Luckily I just closed on a new property FAR away from any big towns, so I can start my secret underground bunker. Truthfully though, I don’t own anything he’s trying to ban. I am by heritage a certified operator and aficionado of the “Mennonite Machine-gun” or to the layman, the lever action rifle.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. After all the definition of assault weapon is pretty flexible. A 16 gauge used in an assault would likely be quickly reclassified as a assault shotgun. Ditto the MMG, especially if either one had a rail, a barrel shroud, an optic/laser, etc. and was black. Like my TS-12. Australia comes to mind.

True that, Gunny. I have huge dislike of the trend towards “tactical lever guns” for just that reason. Well, and because they’re so damn ugly!

Agreed. Kinda like renting a working girl. The ugly one may be functional, but functional isn't everything. ;)

There is a hugely active gun trading classifieds here in Spokane, if you get caught doing an illegal face to face sale (no FFL transfer, no BGC) you get permanently banned. I don't agree with the laws, but I don't think your statement is accurate.

I had an Idaho buyer, he was all ready to meet at a gun shop to do the transfer, but he bailed out when he discovered he had to have a VALID identification card, and his was not current (Idaho address, but WA drivers license.) I suspect he just could not pass a background check, so I did not feel at all bad about that loss.

Online classifieds are a different matter, your putting your business on a public domain...
