Range Report: my daily BB’s 3-13-22

The sun came out so I shoveled some snow and started the RV which hasn’t been started in almost a month. Putting targets out so I can shoot rimfire is too much of a chore so I’m back to plinking BB’s at ten feet. Not much of a challenge yet I do get to shoot.

You might think a $39 Red Ryder wouldn’t be very accurate however it is. One inch groups offhand at 10 yards is doable all day long.

Ah, shooting is shooting, at least up to a point. I know some BB gun shooters who shoot at 5 yards. In fact, 5 yards is official BB gun competition distance.

My indoor airgun shooting has been greatly curtailed this winter because our old dog stays inside in cold weather, now. Just can't take the cold the way he used to do. He stays in one of the rooms where I have the target setup and I won't shoot with him in the room. Might have to setup a BB gun range in another room.

Can't wait to get outdoors to shoot at our backyard range, but it is completely buried in snow this time of year. Hoping next month ... maybe.

I’ll set the BB course up for 5 yards although that doesn’t seem very far. I also want to put some targets out and measure my groups.

Trigger management, if I can call it that, is my biggest problem and surprisingly the Red Ryder helps with that. The trigger on it is completely different than a powder gun and I can isolate my errors.

Shooting in sub-freezing temperatures has also been a big help to me. For some reason my eyes tear up and I can see better. The target appears smaller yet more in focus. I think what is happening is some out of focus rays are either eliminated or focused.

I just returned from the post office and took ten shots with my Red Ryder from ten yards. I hit the gong seven times. It’s actually the reset gong on the left. The real gongs are buried in the snow. The gong at the right is for rimfire and I shoot from a totally different location.

The reset gong is about 1 1/2”.

The biggest issue for me with shooting airguns in the cold is trying to load pellets with cold hands. I fumble a fair number of pellets into the snow when my hands get cold. Tried a pellet pen, but didn't like it.

Now a BB gun repeater might be one solution.

I was shooting this the other day. It’s easy to load compared to some of my riles.

I love it here. I’m snowed in and the only thing to do is plink from my front deck. I’ll step outside and plink for ten minutes and then come inside for a half hour. Warm up and repeat.

The P1/HW45 is a super fun pistol to shoot, for sure. One of my favorite steel blinkers. Really smacks that steel when you get a hit.

Spring up here is very unpredictable, but if the mosquitoes/flies aren't too bad, the summers are pure heaven. Worth the long wait. You're in for a treat.
