9/30/16 Range Report_SGC on Open Sight Friday

The Ditto Declaration
I liked the ditto declaration, which he proclaimed in his quote below. I was able to get to the range, and took him up on it! ;)
ditto1958 wrote:Attention Henry lovers! I hereby declare that tomorrow, September 30, 2016, shall be known as Open Sight Friday. That means that when you go to the range tomorrow, take your guns with iron sights and shoot them. I've got my H009 30-30 ready to go.
It was a relaxed shoot for me today with a perfect, sunny day, temp about 75*, and mild wind. I got out to the nearby MO Dept of Conservation range called Parma Woods. It wasn't packed full, but quite a lot of shooters there today.

Firearm & iron sights.
Henry Small Game Carbine (H001TLP) in .22LR caliber.
Rear bronze Skinner peep with .070" aperture.
Stock front Henry dovetail bead.

Ammo
Shot 110 rounds of Federal 40gr AutoMatch.

Stance and Yardage
Off hand standing at 25 and 50 yards.

Goal
Just have fun! And I was quite successful in meeting my goal. I could tell it was relaxed and fun today. Although I left a lot of POIs in my four targets, I wasn't at all concerned about regularly hitting the bull. Just to send those rounds down range was enough!!

Targets
A relaxed comment first. The bullet holes left by my .22LR ammo sure are small compared to all the .357 Magnums and .45-70 bullet holes we've been seeing lately. Don't squint too hard! And I was in a firing booth with the guy on my right shooting .223 ammo, and the guy on the left shooting .308. You could easily tell whenever I fired my SGC just by listening to the report from my rifle!! (I wonder if those two fellows were chuckling at all as my shots tickled their ears?!?)

Instead of taking these target pics on my usual gray patio chairs as background, I put each target on top of one of my potted plants. That's how relaxed the day was!

Here are my three targets for the day.
Two 6" splash targets, 40 rounds; 25 yards.
Left - 18/20 in target; 1 just above left in cardboard; one in the woods.
Right - 17/20 in target; 3 just to right in cardboard

One 8" DB splash target, 30 rounds; 50 yards.
21/30 in target; 3 on white target paper and 4 in cardboard to the right (VERY RELAXED!).
DSCN1460.JPG
9" paper plate with 3" orange target; 40 rounds; 25 yards.
38/40 in target (the plate); 1 in cardboard toward upper right; one in the woods.

The paper plate was a good ending to a relaxed shoot! Iron sights on my Henry worked great in spite of my elder eyes!
I'm ready to do it again....thanks, ditto, for your declaration. :D

Hope everyone had a good day, too.

Congrats on the fun day at the range, PT7.

I like the paper plate. I have been using paper plates with a one inch stick on dot, but I just bought two rolls of those 3 inch stick on dots from Amazon. Looks like they do a pretty good job.

Thanks for the report.

Yes, WS, an 8" or 9" paper plate is a good target size, and just about perfect with the 3" dot for me. That's especially true at 50 yards, or even when I sometimes shoot at 75 yards. That dot gets small really quickly at those yardages!

Thanks! It was a perfect day.
Extraordinary pleasant weather for shooting outdoors, and having loads of fun with a good 'ole Henry lever-action rifle!
Sure hoping for some more of these pleasant fall days at the range. :)
