Western Gun Display Cabinet

Post by TheBackyardRange » Sun Dec 05, 2021 6:37 pm

So, I started this endeavor about a year and a half, maybe 2 years ago. It’s a slow moving project. I’ll share just a few pics below of how it evolved before I get to the meat and potatoes.

What it was originally, was a trophy case at an arena. Bought it at a government auction for $50. Took a few hours and some back breaking labor to disassemble it and get it home.

I’m not going to sugar coat the fact that I only get a limited space in the house for my guns. I got safes stashed in corners of the house, on every floor. This thing was too big to shove in a corner so I took over the foyer. It’s got to have some trim wok done but I’ll do that when I rebuild the third section. Here’s a few evolution pics.

Wow great idea and work on the rifle hangers! You got a great deal on the cabinet setup and should look really great when finished and filled with some Henrys !

You’ll have to forgive the crooked rifles below, I just shoved some in the case in a hurry. They aren’t where they belong.

So now, I’ve put the Trump Henry in its own case, I need to fit 3 more Henry’s in here. It was originally started for the Henrys. Problem is, we welded up 9 hangers and I can only find 8 of them. I bought a hobby welder, little 100 amp wire feed so I can finish this up. Probably make 2 more because I’ll likely pick up a 45/70 at some point. Also have to remember what paint I used to create that 2 tone effect. I don’t mind putting in the work but I’m curious, is there a better design anyone can think of for hanging those rifles?

The hangers are great but you could plasti-dip the actual rifle holder to prevent scuffing.

I used split 3/8” clear tubing at all contact points. I also used very small clear tubing in the nail groove where the barrel touches. Just tucked it in the groove. I had given a thought to the plasti dip but I think it would make the horseshoes look fake being completely coated. I do have to be careful removing them.

Very Nice. With thirty years in law enforcement behind me, I'm WAY too paranoid to display any of my collections. I always wanted to build a display case to display my knife / sword collection, or maybe the hats / patches from military and law enforcement units. NYPD Swat, US Secret Service, Blue Angels.

Very well thought out and well executed display.

Yes, you do have an impressive canine early warning system.

That and my house is never empty. I work from home, those guns are never loaded. However, there are loaded ones accessible in the event someone is brave enough to walk into a virtual armory and make an attempt. It wouldn’t end well for them. There are 4 accomplished shooters that live here.

Speaking of the dogs, I review details of what to do in the event of a home invasion with my wife on a regular basis. Last couple weeks I have reiterated with her that if she or the boys can’t get to a gun, open the door and let the dogs in. You might dispatch 1 or even two of them but you ain’t getting all 4 before they get you.

You sure put some work into that. Looks very nice.
I have a black walnut gun cabinet with glass doors and I used to keep long guns on display in it as
well as I had my lever guns and over unders hanging on the wall in our family room. Visitors would
often comment on them. The problem became that each time we went on a trip I would have to take
them all down and lock them up. Finally I just locked them up in the safe and let them be.
There are too man home invasions in our area and I decided to keep the bait under cover.

If I travel, its usually with my little brother. This house is very rarely empty. I have safes to cram them in if we ever do go on a trip but that hasn't happened in the 2-1/2 years we've been here. Most important thing is keeping an insurance policy. If no one is home, it takes less than 10 min to open a gun safe with a simple pry bar. Once that is understood, the locked cabinet really doesn't make much of a difference except the ability to see what's inside. I'm in the middle of nowhere, a few miles from civilization, with a pretty lengthy lane. The invisible fence that keeps the dogs at bay extends between 50 to 200 yards away from the house in any direction, depending on which direction you are coming from. Needless to say, we don't exactly get window peekers around here.

So I think if the weather holds tomorrow, I’ll test out this new welder and make the last 2 rifle mounts.

Took my 17 HMR out on the front porch and fired off a few rounds to check function but I haven’t sighted it in yet.

Polished up the 17, 327 and 357 in preparation for final display. Looking good I think…

Check out that reflection off the blued barrel.

I do have a bit of a gripe here but I haven’t given Henry the opportunity to fix it yet. Golden boys aren’t real brass receivers/receiver covers, that means there no polishing the receiver and cover, unless of course, you wish to mess it up real good.

Top is 17, middle is 22LR, bottom is 22 mag. I want to know how that thing (22 mag) made it out of the factory. The machined surface was never polished before it was coated. That thing had to pass at least a couple checks before someone slapped it on a new rifle and sent it out the door and at that point, how was it not noticed how very different the cover is from the receiver? You can see the shiny receiver peeking out at the bottom.
