Which wheel gun should I choose?

Post by Coach » Sun Nov 07, 2021 9:50 pm

My uncle is giving me one of his guns.

He’s moving to a upscale retirement community in Vegas and doesn’t want to take them with him.

Top is a Colt Trooper.357

Middle is a S&W model 19 - .357

Bottom is a S&W .38 spl

Definitely NOT the S&W with the Hillary Hole. The Model 19 might be a little painful to shoot with the small grips and short barrel, but could be a decent backup carry. So by process of elimination the Mk III Trooper would be the winner for me. :)

I have a Trooper II and love it. Really nice workmanship. Smooth action.

That is an easy decision... make him a deal on all 3! Colt Trooper and the Smith 19 top the short list.

Really depends somewhat on what your use will be. In terms of value and collectibility, the Colt is at the top of the list, though a minty vintage S&W Model 19 is also in that category, though not to the extent of the Colt.

The S&W 642 is a current gun with the lock and, with the lock, will probably never become collectible. It's $500 carry gun, but a good one, so if you need a carry gun, there it is. Given that it is such a light gun, it will take a lot of practice to become reasonably accurate with it and even with 38s it will have some snap. Not a gun you would use for an afternoon of pleasant plinking. I had one.

With 38s, though, the Colt and the Model 19 will be pleasant shooters.

I’ve got that same model 19 and it’s a fun gun with 38’s. Forget magnum loads they hurt. I’m just not a fan of Colt revolvers although they usually sell for more than Smith’s. I’ve fired Pythons and Troupers but I just like the feel of a Smith. Also you can fit full size grips on that round butt with no problem.

My head says pick the Colt but my heart says pick the M/19……..

M/19’s with the 2.5” barrel are in high demand and low availability and you could put a set of Hogue rubber grips on it for shooting comfort. Shoot 38’s either standard or high velocity and you will giggle. What’s the dash number on the 19 if you know?

I do not know the dash number.

I have not seen it in person. All I have seen is the picture I shared with you from yesterday.

All three are good guns, and I have owned and shot all of them. My wife carries the airweight 642 daily and has no problem with it, I carried one as well, until I replaced it with the scandium 340 347 snubby.

I liked the Trooper I had, and shot it often, but a friend talked me out of it.

It it were my choice, I would have to go with the Colt Trooper. Being that it's your choice Coach, you would have to fill in some information that only you know. Which one do you prefer and which one would remind you of your uncle the most?
Let us know when you choose.

I chose the 19.

Reasons: I don’t have a 2.5” revolver and I do have a 6” 66-2.

The colt would be great but my nephew who will eventually get all my guns wants the 19. He already has my dad's, his grandpa’s 6” 19 and cherishes it.

It was a great Dilemma to have…
