Seems I've found something a little rare.(little update)

Post by Vaquero » Tue Oct 26, 2021 8:13 am

Yesterday afternoon while checking game cameras I saw something hanging off a tree.
Having no idea, I made my way over to it and snapped a pic.
Never seen one before so I sent it to some buddies in a group text we have. A friend up in Wisconsin said a good friend of his said it was Lion's mane mushroom. This one is softball size.
Supposed to be real good for you.
Anyone else ever stumbled upon any?

Looks like some creature got his head inside the tree eating insects. I don't mess with mushrooms. Alien mushroom creatures?

Ran across this guy when hunting a couple weeks ago. Biggest mushroom I've ever seen. Still, this one looks like a mushroom, not a Star Trek prop. FWIW, that is not a small sapling next to it. This thing was plate sized.

We have a lot of mushrooms growing in our woods, but I know so little about them that I leave them alone.
I've read how they kill by destroying vital organs and it scared me. Wish I knew more.

Here's one I found a few weeks ago. Some say it's edible, but I don't know.
Any experts on here?

Coop I'm not sure but looks like chicken of the woods. Which is delicious. I copied the pic. Will send it to a buddy, will get back to ya.

As to the Lions mane, I'd never heard of it or saw one before that I remember. Google them, some interesting facts.

Coop, my buddy says it looks like it is, but if it has gills on the underside then NO.

I love mushrooms, but I will leave it to the pros as to which ones I'll eat.

Just did some research on the Lions Mane...wow, some extraordinary benifits in lab animals and very harmless, if not beneficial to humans. Also said, they taste kinda like seafood! ( crab or lobster ). Go figure!
Good post Randy. Got me thinkn'

Your Welcome Coop, got a friend in St. Louis that has some growing in his backyard.
He harvests his, I tried them last time I was there, they were oh pretty good.
I'd eat 'em again.
I will be trying these Lion's mane for sure, I'll get ack down there in the next few days.
Was chattin with another guy on a different gun forum about 'em that seems to know quite a bit about schroons.
I asked this morn if I should wait or go on and harvest, but he hasn't responded as of yet.

A guy I work with was talking yesterday about how much he would like to find some lions mane. He said it was delicious.

Well the day before yesterday I went and retrieved the schroon, took a little longer than I thought to find it again.
Yesterday we sautéed the thing in some butter...OMG was that Delicious, :o kind of tasted like crab.
Definitely be keeping an eye open for it from now on.

Well, look what I found while out hunting today. Sorry for the poor pic. All I had was my cell phone with no exposure control, so the whites are all blown out. Way too much overexposure to recover with post editing. looks like it might be a lions mane. The sides and bottom are covered with dangling "hairs". The whole thing is white, contrary to what the bottom fringe in the picture looks like. It's not too big, maybe the size of a large apple, or maybe small grapefruit.
