Testing Matt's Bullets .44 250 gr lead HP in 44 special....

Post by fortyshooter » Tue Oct 19, 2021 6:16 pm

Got to the range this afternoon to test a load I put together last night. For .44 Special use it's the 11 Bhn 250 gr. lead hollow point designed by Matt
for speeds 850-1000 FPS. Loaded up a few with 6.5 Unique which is just about max for a 250 gr. lead .44 bullet. The test revolver was my 4 1/2 inch
Ruger Flat Top Bisley in .44 Special. Bullet speeds were 840-865 FPS and 10 ft. from ballistic gel block. Just a slight bit of lead at cylinder end of barrel after 10 shots. Now powder coat these and that would be even better. Good load for S.D. use.

Was surprised to see close to .750 expansion along with 13.5 to 15 inch gel penetration at those speeds. That 250 gr. bullet weight goes to work pushing thru! The other shot may have been a bit slower with a bit less expansion but traveled to 15 inch gel depth where the first shot expanded to about .750 but stopped at 13.5 inch. Either one will get the job done.

So if your bullet ends up at size of your barrel O.D. and gets the distance in target it's good to go!

if it expands to same size of barrel with 13-15 inch of gel penetration it is good enough for .44 special.jpg
