Frontier Black Powder October 1800

Post by RanchRoper » Mon Oct 11, 2021 4:27 pm

After a cold night it turned out a nice day. It was 15F when I arrived at the range, and warmed up to 31F by the time I left. No wind so I was trying my hand at some long range shooting with my .50 cal Frontier black powder rifle.

65 grains Goex 2fg
.490 lead ball
.015 patch

100 yds on a small target, this was 8 rounds at the target, with looks like 5 on the circle and the others clipped the edge or missed. Maybe 6 in the circle, the hits on the right are hard to count, could be 3. This is off hand shooting so it's not easy by any stretch. I shoot this rifle a lot so sort of have the sights and elevation figured out but depends on the day and any breeze affects the trajectory.

200 yds on a larger 10" target, this is 5 rounds but only 2 were successful on the circle, the other 3 were 1/2 to 1 inch below the paper. It's a guessing game to figure out the angle at this distance, but again this is open primitive iron sights and shot off hand. 2 out of 5 ain't bad for 64 year old eyes I guess.

Great shooting in the chill RR ! 15F already up that way? My brain can't think of such right now in October!

Great shooting, as always, especially at those distances. Can't imagine shooting a traditional ML at 200 yards and estimating the hold over needed. Very impressive.

Snow, already? We haven't even had a frost, yet, which is downright freaky for us.

It's been a weird day, high never got above 32F. We can have a snowstorm come raging through anytime after Oct 1st. Last year this time we had over a foot on the ground.

Nice I know how hard it is at 100 yards offhand. We have a buffalo gong at the range Im lucky to hit it 2 outa 6 times. You would of hit it all 8.

64? Man - by the time I'm 64 I won't be able to see a 10" target at 200 yards (probably not helped by all the hours at work sitting in front of a monitor). Point is you never cease to amaze. Long shots, round ball, and now - 64 years old in 15 degrees dropping shots in at 200 yards - off hand with irons.

"2 out of 5 ain't bad for 64 year old eyes I guess."

All righty then.
