44 special far better than the mag.

Post by Johnnyjr » Wed Aug 04, 2021 5:33 am

Worked up a few loads in the magnum with 240 grain bullets and 2400.. Shooting 27 yards. Poor accuracy. Used the same bullet and powder in the special. To say the least, the special was darn near 5 in one hole..What's up with that. ??

Was your special subsonic mv?

Are you using a chrono? From your question, I guess not. If you don’t want to use one, just use the Spl load and be happy. Until you get some actual hard data, you are just floundering, when it comes to reloading for accuracy.

Has to do with the sonic transition zone. Normally a sub-sonic bullet will be more accurate since it will never experience in-flight trans-sonic effects on stability. Conversely, a supersonic (at the muzzle) bullet will pass thru the trans-sonic region at some point during it's flight as it slows. A bullet that leaves the muzzle within the trans-sonic region may, or may not, become unstable immediately, depending on several factors such as shape, spin, etc..

All that said, given the very close range you're shooting at, there may be no discernible effect due to this phenomenon since the flight time is so short in either case, and your results may be due to something else entirely. It's just something to consider. :)

Putting your Magnum load in the 44 Special case would raise the pressure due to shorter case and bullet being seated deeper.
What was your 2400 load data? Maybe bump up the load in the Magnum case BUT keep within max load for the powder and bullet and see if it shoots better.
I use Unique for mid range 44 Mag loads and 2400 for the hotter loads.

This 44 is all new to loading to me. I have 200/240/245 grain and have been playing around at short distances with it. But like I said which I fail to understand is why the special is so much more accurate thru the big boy. I have to be missing something.

Without any load info or details on what you are doing with each load its hard to comment on the question you have asked.
