I have a .41, but the ballistics are very similar to the .44. My typical shot is between 75 to 120 yds, so my sight in is 100, which is also the zero parallax for my Nikon, which means I need to account for parallax for shots at greater or lesser distances from 100yds. Not a big deal if you are aware of it.

Mine is sighted at 50 yds because of the distance to the back yard gongs is 50.
If I hunt with it, it will most likely be in the woods and be just right.
The 41 is scoped and zeroed at 75 yds., and I can still hit the gongs No problem.

I sight ours in with a Zero at 100 yards .... with our 240's the I can place the cross hairs just below my target and they will take deer out with no trouble

As mentioned find out the parallax distance your scope is zeroed for. Mine (41 mag not 44) has a 60 yard parallax scope so I sighted it in at 50 yards. (No 60 yard target stand at 60 yards). Most centerfire scopes will be 100 yard parallax adjusted.

That does make a difference. If you're not using a chrono & ballistics pgm to get an accurate read on muzzle velocity and to calculate drop, I'd suggest doing so, and sight in at a distance that's suitable for your rifle and ammo. It should be sighted in at a distance that is prior to the bullet slowing below Mach 1 (approx 1100fps). JBM is a good on-line calculator for determining this and other factors.

Peep sights, 50 yards, set to shoot about 1" above POA. This works out to plus or minus 1 to 2" everywhere from 50 to 150 yards.
50 yards is a nice range to shoot at action targets which is my primary use for the rifle. Fun. I like 180 grain Remington loads marked as 1610 FPS (out of a revolver) although they are short, conical and every 4th or 5th one doesn't feed smoothly. They don't jam, just give a bit of trouble. They're hot and flat shooting.
If I was going to hunt for subsistence food (unlikely) I would probably put an optic on it, but mine (usually cheep) always needed sighted in and I have less faith in them than iron sights.
Here in Ohio most deer are taken well below 100 yards anyway.
