45 colt in the back yard.

Post by Vaquero » Sat Jul 17, 2021 8:38 pm

Well I got some bullets from a fellow member, Hornady 250gr xtp's 45 cal. A member of another forum and good friend tried these in his new Henry CCH 45 colt. So I wanted to try them in my Marlin and Rossi rifles. He was using 2400, and I have a good bit of it on hand. Loads were 19.8, 20.0, and 20.2, and it seems both rifles preferred different loads. Distance was about just a little more than 50yds.
First off was the Marlin  aiming at the top dot, believe it a bit low but a good group. then the hole with the circle was after a small adjustment, which wasn't enough. So after 2 more notches we got the 4 above. ;)

That was a good load test Randy. I use the 20 grain load for the hotter rounds of Colt 45 with that bullet also.

Very cool on the sight AND being able to shoot your 45 in the backyard. Hey, I think we need to have a poll on what to name forty's peep.

Nice testing Randy. It's very clear each rifle had it's preferred load. Any idea what kind of velocity you're getting with those loads? Or at least what the book says you should be getting.

I don't own a chrono, but according to the Hornady manual.

And a noticeable difference in recoil compared to the cast that I usually shoot.

I posted these results else where and two different people said they had good results with 18.5 grs. of 2400.
So me, I loaded 10 and tried 'em.
In the Rossi first and third in the orange.
With the Marlin first second touched, the far left was operator error, knew when I pulled the trigger.

That Marlin seems to like 2400. 19.8gr looks pretty good.

Thanks Randy. That big ole 250 gr. bullet is moving along. Being jacketed allows you to push that faster than cast lead. I tried pushing some 250 gr. cast bullets, but about the fastest I could get was 1080 fps.

Paul, I mostly shoot cast and enjoy them a lot., I was just playin with these jacketed pills.
I don't push the cast to fast, just like a nice accurate load to bang the gongs around.
