Range Report - Kitty-Kat Sneeze load

Post by Headhog » Mon Jun 28, 2021 4:48 pm

As planned I headed out to the range today to test out my Kitty-Kat Sneeze load. This is a 38 Spl. cartridge with a 158 gr. RNFP bullet and 3.5 gr. of Hodgdon Universal. I specifically wanted a light recoils load for my S&W Model 19 with 2" barrel. The rounded butt grip makes this gun hard to handle and if I use a stout load it moves around in my hand.

Bingo, this load is a keeper. The recoil is almost nonexistent and an extra plus is relatively little smoke. I'm guessing the lack of smoke was due to the hy-tek coated lead bullet. I did not bring the chrono with me today, but my guess is this load is running about 700-750 fps with the 2" barrel. Since I had my Rossi R92 with me also, I tried 6 rounds in it. There was no felt recoil from the rifle. With my hearing protection on, the report sounded like a .22 caliber round.

Below is a picture of the first 6 shots double action, off-hand from 15 yds. The shot to the left was my fault and I called it when the shot went off.

Then I got brave and fired 3 rounds at a target I placed at 50 yds for my rifle. I had to try the 50 yard shot, just for the fun of it. Again I fired off-hand double action. I'm not sure, but that low round, in the cardboard, may have started to tumble and keyholed.

When I fired this load from my Rossi the shots grouped about 6" below point of aim, but none keyholed.

It's a 20" stainless. I picked it up in a pawn shop last September.

My 357 has the 24" octagon barrel, and I have a 20" blued one in 45 colt.
Never really shot any light loads in either of mine, and both are a little bit high at 50 yds.
