Frontier shootin' May 16th

Post by RanchRoper » Sun May 16, 2021 6:47 pm

My .50 cal Frontier long rifle....great day to make smoke!

50 grains Triple 7 powder
.490 lead ball
.015 patch
open primitive sights

No wind today, 70F and I had the range to myself! Where is everybody???

I am trying to shoot this black powder rifle off hand from a standing position all the time now. It shoulders better, I guess that's what they were meant for. Shooting from 1 knee it just feels awkward. So, Davy Crockett style it is. Or maybe it's just getting tougher to unlock my knees. Like Scarlett O'Hara said, I'll think about that tomorrow.

50 yds, 5 round group off hand

So far so good, then I shrunk the target....same distance off hand, 3 rounds, 1 went in the wood just left of the target.

Then the real challenge....100 yds off hand, 6 rounds, 4 in the black circle more or less, 2 near bottom left as well. It's a long way and the best ones I shot were the ones I didn't spend a lot of time aiming.
- shoulder
- set rear trigger
- point
- touch front trigger

If I second guess myself while aiming, my arm gets tired and the bottom left ones are the result. Still it's a 10" circle 100 yds away. So I don't beat myself up.

Thanks for lookin', hope you can get out and shoot, summer's here!

Great shooting especially at the 100 yard target. Meat would be on the table. Do you have as much fun as that Maniac in Kentucky does? That guy is a riot.

I go off one shot of .45 Colt at the gong from 45 yds. yesterday after working around the range. The Rossi Ranch Hand was the gun of choice.
Will try to make more shooting time.
Great shootin' RR!!

RR, reading your posts is kind of like watching one of my favorite westerns. Very entertaining, not to mention the AWESOME offhand sooting. Still very tempted to get into ML, again, but don't think my old eyes are up to shooting those primitive iron sights, anymore. Definitely no place for a red dot or a scope. :)
