March 14th, 1885

Post by RanchRoper » Sun Mar 14, 2021 3:31 pm

Real nice day at the range, slight breeze and sunshine. 60F.

Decided to shoot my 1885 Highwall 45 Colt today. Only 1 target, 200 yds shooting from 1 knee. 200 gr, LFN, 7.6 gn Universal. Punchy load.

Rear tang up, put 50 rounds at a 12" target. Looks like 34 on the paper, the rest went into the wood around it. Started out shooting low, and took me a few to get the elevation working, windage wasn't bad even on the low ones into the wood. Not my best target by any stretch, but it's all out there. My little binoculars don't see that well way out there so did lots of walking back and forth today. I stuck the target to a big white cardboard sheet so I could see what was going on. Didn't really need it, the backboard is full of holes but not really any this size. :)

Haha....no idea, I adjust it all the time. I should learn to leave it alone once I have it working but I am always fiddling with it. I think I am slowly getting a feel for it. This rifle shoots fine with just the regular buckhorns out to 100 yds, and likely would out to 200 too but I just use the tang out there.

10-4 .... have you had an opportunity to run some of your 45's through a Chrony .. :?: .. I'm curious about the trajectory of your load at the longer distances you are now shooting

I don't have one, but I think there is lots of drop on the 200 gr.

Dang RR; once again, you're shooting at 200 yards is outstanding. You certainly have your firearms dialed. Excellent.

RR your 200 yd. targets are amazing. Most shooters would be happy with groups like yours at 50 yd. Between your skill and the accuracy of that Highwall, that a hard combination to beat.

Keep up the fantastic work.

Paul.

Wow 200 yds. is some great shooting RR! Just how big is that 12 inch target from 200 yds. when sighting it in?
