-45 trout fishing trip
Well it was -20 this morning with 20 mile an hour winds. (-45 wind chill) Perfect day to walk a mile out to an old mine pit and go trout fishing! Needless to say my son, his friend and I had the lake to ourselves most of the day!
Slow fishing, but my son landed a beauty! Not supposed to get above 0 Fahrenheit for the next ten days here.

Good for you, Greyhawk. We're over here in the neighboring Wisconsin north woods. Same cold, this week. Might not break zero, tomorrow. I did a little snowshoeing and even a little fat biking, today. Us north woods folks don't hibernate during the winter.

Re: -45 trout fishing trip
haven't heard if the ice on Lake Poinsett in east-central SD has gotten thick enough to support ice fishing or not .... a few weeks ago a fellow and his grandson fell through, both died ....

Likewise here; below zero next 10 days or so. Nice fish.

With below 0 temps I would think it would be getting thicker

Yes... It happens every year here... Lost a fellow in a local lake a few weeks ago when his truck went through.. We walked to, and out on this lake.. 12" of good ice.
The lake that I have my spear house on has 18" of real clear good ice. I do drive my truck out there with confidence.
Re: -45 trout fishing trip
It's sure a sad deal when we lose folks through the ice. It really never is totally safe.

Re: -45 trout fishing trip
Our lake is never totally safe, even in below zero weather, that's for sure. We have a lot of bog springs in spots that never really freeze hard, so you have to know the lake to avoid those spots.
Re: -45 trout fishing trip
Sometimes if there is a lot of snow cover on the ice it can act as an insulation and ice does not get thicker

Re: -45 trout fishing trip
That is a beauty trout! I would love to catch some trout through the ice. I've only tried it once when the ice was good enough on Superior just outside of Duluth. Got skunked that day for trout, but did get a few eelpout.
