just returned from picking up our 2011 Chevy 1500 from a local garage following its first major (by major I refer to cost, not the nature of the problem) repair .... in years past I would have fixed it myself but those days are gone .... specifically, replacement of the rear brake shoes, drums and wheel cylinders .... in looking at the bill, is somewhat odd to see that the parts cost almost twice the charge for labor .... $200+ labor, $400+ in parts .... hopefully the replacements will last as long as the originals

That is a bit odd. Usually the other way around, or about equal. I used to do that stuff myself also, but don't recall brake parts costing that much!

case in point .... needed a new key for our Chevy truck .... went to Auto Zone, they and two other parts stores informed me they don't cut keys .... went to Ace Hardware, they cut keys but don't have and can't order the blank required .... no other choice, drove to out Chevy dealership .... with tax, $52 dollars later I have a replacement key .... learned it has a chip in it but even with a chip, that sounds expensive to me

I couldn't locate the second key for my 2006 Chevy Colorado Truck, so two years ago I bought an $8 blank for it on Amazon and had it cut for a dollar at the hardware store. It works just fine. I've since located the original, so now I have three. This truck has only 53K miles on it and, obviously, I don't use it very much, though I do take it out of the garage and drive it three or four times per month.

What I have a problem with is the passlock anti-theft system that on occasion will prevent the truck from starting. It began about three years ago. It's a well known and common problem that GM has simply ignored. I've learned online that when it happens I should leave the key in the on position and wait about ten minutes for the computer to reset and try again. So far, that has worked. I haven't taken it in to the dealer yet, but when I do, I understand it will be an expensive repair. http://www.chevroletproblems.com/passlock/

heads up appreciated .... just ordered 2 blanks and 1 red remote for my wife .... after this morning I know to program the keys .... will have to get a garage to program the remote

Home Depot cuts keys not sure if the could of done your truck or not.

we've had house keys cut at our local Home Depot .... its about a 50 - 50 chance that the key they give you will work .... it all depends on who happens to be running their machine .... our local Ace Hardware seems to do a pretty good job

Thats the key to anything you buy at one of those types of stores. Sams and Costco included. You might get a better deal but if whoever is running the show at Sams and Costco doesnt know what there doing then that cheaper price aint so cheap anymore.

I always get my keys cut at a local locksmith/security business. Very rarely have to take a key back to them for a re-do. They even have the capability to make unique chipped keys rather than clones and charge around a quarter of what car dealer's charge. I had one made for a friend's Honda for around $50 complete, not sure what Honda charges but I know Mazda dealers charge over $200 and that doesn't include the key.

I've not had good luck with new automatic key cutter's most hardware stores are going to.

earlier in December we ordered 3 replacement Key Fob Keyless Entry Remotes for our almost 10 year old Silverado .... $9 each from Amazon .... after learning the dealership would charge $50 each to program them, I decided to take them to a local independent shop .... to program them, a diagnostics computer has to be hooked up to the truck .... the local shop charged $20 program all 3 .... they all work

a bit of good news (for a change ) .... after being charged way more for a single replacement ignition key for our Chevy 1500 that I was happy with, I ordered a pack of 2 "KeylessOption Replacement Uncut Transponder Chip Key Blank Ignition for Circle Plus" from Amazon ====> https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KT ... UTF8&psc=1 .... just got back from taking those two keys to our local ACE Hardware where they cut the blanks to fit our truck .... first, both keys fit perfectly .... second, after programming them, they crank the truck .... third, they didn't charge me a cent for cutting them .... they have no clue how much business of ours they will get from now on as a result
