New .44 Mag User questions

Hey all, newbie here. I just bought a .44 Mag Henry Big Boy Saturday the 5th and actually found a 100 rounds of the LeveRevoltion 225gr from a friend. Since I plan to deer hunt in Iowa next weekend, it seemed logical. Comments and questions to follow!

So, quick barrel swab and went to the range. Out of the box shot 2 inches high at 50 yards and near spot on at 100. The rear sight was at its lowest position but I can live with those groups.

Manual is a bit sparse on cleaning, but did mention "dont use a bore snake, it can damage your rifle". I am a big bore snake fan, so is this an issue? I searched on the posts here and a lot of people use a bore snake on their Henry. (I would like to do a dry pull after a sub 20 round day and a regular rod/patch cleaning on days with more rounds).

I see I can also shoot .44 Special and I can find these on the shelf (cowboy action). Should I stay with jacketed rounds only or is there and issue using the wad cutter lead rounds for practice and shooting the JHPs for hunting?

Thats all for now, I am sure I will have more later. I kick myself for not buying a lever action sooner. I own an Ithica falling block .22 lever action, but that does not compare in any way the fun level of this .44!

Welcome to the forum from CT, Jake. And congratulations on your new Henry.

The manual for my Big Boy Brass .357 didn't come with a warning about using a bore snake, so I've been using one for years. I can't imagine what damage it could do other than scratching the outside of the receiver when pulling it up and into the chamber, which should be done with care. Unless I hear otherwise, I'm going to continue to use mine.

Personally, I don't like to mix lead and copper in any gun. Different ballistics, not necessarily a fouling issue, although it could become one.

first, welcome to our forum, delighted to have you join us .... do hope you will be an active member who reads and post often .... our Henry BBS 44 Mag has proven to be one heck of a fine rifle .... its very accurate and is fun to fire .... down the road do you plan on loading your own ammo .... I'm not a fan of LeverRevolution ammo but with the way things are right now, its good to hear you've found something you can hunt with .... I don't believe in mixing jacketed and cast bullets .... yes you can fire 44 special but be advised that the cases are shorter than 44 Mags so a carbon ring can form in the chamber .... that ring can interfere with chambering 44 Mags .... please check in often with use your impressions and range reports as you become better acquainted with your new Henry .... be sure to follow the link below to where you can add it to our community's total

Guess I dont know why a bore snake would cause damage to you rifle. Welcome to the forum glad you joined us. Enjoy the new 44. I guess a call to Henry could be done also. Maybe a tech there would share his idea behind not using one.
