Friday at the range

Post by bandit1250 » Sat Aug 01, 2020 11:04 am

Went to the range yesterday. No one wanted to go so I went alone. Made this my Remington day. I took my Dad's mint 513 T and my 540XR and my most recent buy is the 540X. Same rifle as the XR with the more standard style target stock. Both of the 540's are fantastic shooters and are very easy to shoot amazingly small groups. They lay so well on sand bags the cross hairs never move. The XR had a straight 12X Leupold on it and moved the 12X to the X model and put a fixed T-24X Weaver on the XR. I could shoot smaller groups with the 12X when it was on the XR and there will soon be another 12X back on it when I rob the Leupold 12X Silhouette scope from my CZ Grand Finale. I shot about 25+ groups of 5 shots and none were as big as 1/2" with most being 3/8" and a few from each rifle as small as 3/16-1/4". I just feel more at ease with the the 12X scope and don't seem to get blurry eyed that I get with the 24X. I had one group from the 540X with the 12X Leupold that is a single hole only slightly over bullet diameter. I was using less than mid grade RWS target rifle and Geco bolt rifle in both with selected lot numbers I know are accurate. The highest grade I had at the range was SK+ which is very accurate but the others were sometimes even better than it. The recently acquired 540X is a cheap date to take to the range. Not particular on ammo and shoots almost any brand standard velocity under a half inch about every target. CCI won't chamber with out a lot of force in either rifle due to having the match chambers. If you chamber a CCI you better plan on shooting it because the extractors will not pull it out. For that reason and the lower accuracy I won't be using any of that anymore in the Remington's. Dad's 513 T will chamber the CCI fine with the more standard cut chamber. I saved the targets from these rifles and will post pictures when I find a camera I wan't. The 513T shot very well but won't quite shoot with the other two Remington's with their better triggers and tight chambers. It only has a 3-9 Leupold on it. Take care and shoot often. bandit

Those are some very serious groups, bandit. It would take a full custom rifle to stay with those 540s. Very impressive.

For sure, that's the trade off with match chamber 22 LRs. Back when I was shooting Contenders with match chambers, with some brands of ammo, I sometimes had to use the eraser end of a pencil to seat the ammo in the chamber. Match chambers do make a difference, though. Our CZ 457 MTR (match target rifle) will outshoot our other CZs with standard chambers and that is really saying something. Pure bench gun, though. Not a gun you want to carry very far.

I have a 540X also and it is incredibly accurate and a lot of fun to shoot.

Great shooting bandit. I’m a sandbag person myself.
