Idaho enhanced carry permit

Post by Paratus » Fri Jul 17, 2020 2:52 pm

Afternoon,
Apparently Idaho has two levels of concealed carry permit; primary distinction really is about the reciprocity of the permit in other states. Idaho for the enhanced version (larger % of states honoring) wants 100 rounds of live fire, 50 of 57 in the target area, at distances of 9' to 30', (I shot 9, 25, and 50 as I don't know exact distances and # of shots per) and both strong hand as well as weak hand. I have been told the remaining rounds fired are to demonstrate familiarity with the functions of the pistol-loading-magazine etc.

None of my target work approaches some of the targets posted, but for my purposes (defensive or food) and distances I am comfortable stating I can hit where I am pointed and I am not endangering others shooting in proximity.

I tend toward prepared (If Latin wasn't your thing, perhaps my screen name makes a bit more sense), so off to the range this morning to see if I can get to minute of desert plate LOL.

Pretty obvious to understand the 9' vs the 50'

PS-a sig 239 in 9 mm; stock except for the recent addition of Truglow sights as the Sig were done after 9 years of owning.

Paratus,

I took the Idaho Enhanced course from Center Target Sports in Post Falls (as I suspect you will also) and like all the other courses offered by them it was fantastic. Great classroom instruction including the required presentation from a Law Enforcement Officer followed by the range time. The shooting requirements were not difficult, anybody with average handgun abilities (Like me) will do fine. No drawing from holsters, no mag changes or other drills included. I think we did run one mag with our support hands. No timing limits or any other pressures like that. Merely your demonstration of basic accuracy and handgun safety. I used my S&W Shield 9mm which is a glorified pocket pistol and it was plenty accurate for the shooting required. I did not use my carry ammo as that would be pretty expensive but just used CCI Blazer Brass 9mm. Funny, I did bring my 6” 686 revolver in case I couldn’t be accurate enough with my little pistol but it was no problem. I don’t recall the distances but they were manageable.

Enjoy the course.

MS has a similar permit system (if you ignore the permitless carry allowance). Our Enhanced Permit lets you carry in places that a regular permit or no permit does not allow (schools, courthouses, etc.). An Enhanced permit does not require additional training for Active or Retired/Honorably separated/Reserve LEO and Military, only a affidavit and applicable LEO/Military identification (ID or DD214 for military) - no extra fee either. Although most folks who apply for one will normally have some significant experience and/or advanced training.

On another level, qualifying for this level of proficiency is something that is studiously ignored by the usual suspects. ;) You done good. :)
