I guess I should have said "better off hand feeding ammunition". Either way, it's a pretty desperate situation. Throwing the rifle and running might be the best option as you said.

When hunting I always carry a sidearm. We have a lot of feral hogs around here, that is what I am hunting, and they are known to charge people. My buddy's son has been charged twice. Once it managed to rip a section of his trousers. Luckily it missed his leg. My buddy said his bolt action rifle sounded like a full auto.

I usually carry my 9mm. Not as formidable a caliber as .357, but being small and semi auto, I can fire a lot of rounds quickly, and react much quicker than I can with a rifle. A 1911 in .45 would be better, but I don't own one, and can't see getting one just to carry in the woods.

I was told at the skeet range to hold the shotgun with the left hand all the way at the end of the forestock. It makes things more stable. I need to see how I naturally hold the Henry when I get back to the range.

interesting info .... thanks for posting the link .... guess I'm getting way to old .... I no longer have much interest in seeing how fast I can throw lead down range .... on the other hand, I have little interest in agonizing over each round as is common to long range, precision shooting ....

It is not how fast you put lead down range . I've been shooting all types of combat matches for over 50 years and I love kicking butt and winning with pistol , rifle or shotguns I built most all my match guns and made the ammo for them too . I don't like sitting home with the boob tube on watching basketball , football and baseball and rooting for a team with a beer in my hand and if they win you say WE WON , WE WON and the only thing you did was was get another beer . This stuff in video is idea of fun .

I thought hickok45 gave a good review of the Henry rifle. But he obviously preferred all the work associated with a loading gate instead of loading directly into the tube like Henry rifles do.
I watched one of his reviews of the Winchester or Marlin loading. I don’t see how he can describe that loading gate and still like using one.

He told about carrying a T-handle shaped tool to shove the cartridges into one of them.

He always looses count of how many he has loaded in it and tries loading an extra if he goes for a full magazine.

The Henry corrects the some of the problems created by a loading gate. If he would watch his own videos back to back he would realize he is making a pretty good film in favor of tube fed loading.

I enjoy watching the hickok45 movies and will defend his right to continue liking the wrong way in my opinion of loading his lever-gun.
I will continue loading mine the correct way, in the tube the way Henry designed it.

In the last 60 yrs I've owned well over 60 cars , trucks and motorcycles and only 3 of them had automatic transmissions . I prefer manual transmissions . My Marlin 39A 22 was a tube fed and I hunt with it for 40 yrs and hated the outside tube fill tube . With the loading gate you could shoot 2 or 3 rds and continue walking or riding your horse and top it off easy and not worry about bending or dropping the inter tube . In my loading gate guns I use the back end of a old Bic pen for a ammo pusher . You don't need it but it make loading 1000 rd a day much easier and faster .

I watched the vid twice. I think the 2nd time I watched it it seemed more like it was just a preference thing on the gate. It looks like he also got a balky Big Boy. We all know it can happen. I also think that the 38/357 rifles have more tendency to be balky than the 44 mag or 45 colt. Just going by reports on the forums. I'm a little surprised it was source through Bud's even though they are a sponsor. Henry has given them 2 Originals. I would think he could get whatever he wanted from them for T+E.

He never really mentioned the Made in USA thing either. I think the health issues have kicked his butt more than he lets on. The vids before and after seem to reflect that a little. Like a lot of us he's not 25 anymore. I like his stuff and hope he bounces back 100%!
