Torpedo time with the 1885 High Wall !

After taking care of range maintenance chores it was time to test those 500 gr. .45-70 rounds loaded with full case of Alliant Black MZ using the
Uberti High Wall. Also I brought along my 1858 Remmie to join the fun with 230 gr. 45 Colt Black MZ loads...getting to like this revolver!!

Now to get my video gaffs out the way...The tape was yellow and not black... It's not a Uberti Henry...

Anyway... was also trying out the Ghost Ring insert rear sight I had borrowed of my .44 Henry Carbine.
My results from that were it's easier for me to find the front sight and line up on target but the front sight needs to be a bit larger.

Acurracy with the High Wall still up for discussion since I need to get consistency with groups and not sure if the 500 gr. loads with the
Black MZ are the best for that bullet. The Uberti might just prefer a 405 gr. load for best target use under 100 yds.

Now those 500 gr. rounds did give a bit of fun with some kick and lot's of smoke and the clean up was easy with just a spray and patch swab of Ballistol
water mix.

The ol' Remmie impressed me with that quick 5 rounds on ol' Deadwood Jr. the cardboard copy of Deadwood original...still a bad guy though!

interesting results with the 500 gr'er .... can't help but wonder if the keyholers weren't the shots fired from the longest distance .. .. for my money, your sight was amazingly close .... have to tip my cap, no way I'd attempt to test (much less adjust) a rifle's sight while shooting standing or from one knee .... that is specially true for a hard kicker .... I have to be anchored at bench ....

Shortly after I heard that familiar sound of a 4 wheeler coming down the road...my neighbor. He wanted to see what all the fuss was about.
Something about having to readjust pictures on his wall!

a few years ago I spent some time trying to work up a 45-70 load using 500 gr Acme Bullet Co. Grain RNFP hard cast coated bullets .... I found that unless loaded to the max, starting at a little over 35 yards they tumbled .... see pictures below .... max loads produced more recoil than I was willing to put up with .... still have a bunch of them on the shelf that I doubt will ever see the light of day

I guess the bullet needs a certain speed to stay stable. Max load 500 gr. bullets not fun to shoot!
From what I read the twist rate of the Uberti High Walls is a bit slower at 1 in 20 which doesn't help.

for use in our 45-70 we've decided to use 300 gr Nosler Ballistic Silvertips both on the range and in the woods .... if we should ever need something heavier, we plan to load Barnes Buster 400 gr https://www.barnesbullets.com/bullets/buster/ .... the pictures below show Nosler 300 gr (black), Barnes 400 gr (gold), and Acne 500 gr (red)

Ouch. I saw that pad on the butt stock of that Hi Wall. Did you go to the gong after the last shot and see if it was a keyhole hit by chance? Id be curious also if more powder fixed the keyhole issue.
