All Weather bore

Are the bore of AW barrels hard chromed. After shooting my 45 70 I ran a boresnake through 2-3 times cleaned the outside and oiled the black bits . Approx 2 months later I checked it and the bore looked dirty . Ran the snake through the barrel and as the brush part came out it looked like rust dust did too. A clean patch followed and that also had brown stains. The bore was oiled and not used for 5 months it still looks good. The possible rust was not what I expected from a chrome lined bore.

it is my understanding that Henry's all weather rifle barrels are "Hard Chrome Plated Steel" .... what bullets are you firing ..

from what I can see, it might be copper residue from your bullet's jackets

Yup thats not rust thats copper

yes thats copper you can see, about the same as in my cz 458 win mag. When I use A tight patch on a jag normally the copper is green to black, the patch felt rough in the AW and came out rust red stained it cleaned up with hoppes and the bore felt slick again. Just lost the confidence to use it hard and put away wet. "Not that I would."

Agree with JEBar & Al, looks like copper to me. Altho it's not impossible for stainless steel to rust, depending on any alloy. Pure stainless won't. Not your problem, just clean the copper, you're fine.

From my reading about the AW rifles it is said that barrel and all external parts are hard chromed but never has it said the bore is chrome lined. It may well be as I assumed but this one could have a problem or its the copper behaving odd with the chrome. The govt crushed 3 of my chrome lined guns last year I have one plus the Henry left its only the Henry that has had the patch come out red brown in 30 years.

copper fowling was an issue that came as something of a surprise to me a couple of years ago when I found it in the barrel of my almost 20 year old barrel of my favorite hunting rifle .... the link below is to a rather long discussion of copper fowling that has some good info .... one of the points raised centers on many folks find the inside of the barrels of standard production firearms don't seem to be as finely honed as those of years ago .... when that's the case, jacketed bullets can leave copper traces inside the barrel .... some folks believe that as more and more rounds pass through the barrel, they will hone it and will reduce the fowling

Cooper fouling in several of my guns is an issue. One I have easily solved on most of them by cleaning with a copper solvent at the end of my normal cleaning. If shooting more rounds through the barrel does hone it then the copper will have to be removed after every shoot otherwise you will just be honing the copper fouling. The guns that are the worst offenders I will pressure lap them and it has always helped. My new 357 BB seems to take a lot of scrubbing and multiple patches of copper solvent before it doesn't discolor the patch. It shoots well so if in the future the problem remains the same I will probably fire lap it with the higher grits just to smooth the bore.

I have used, actually still do, a 50-50 mix of Hoppe's#9 and Kroil. A couple wet patches thru the bore and let set for a while. An hour should do. Go thru your normal cleaning, should be good. All bets are off if the bore is really, really rough. Not the norm tho. Try the mix if possible. Certainly won't hurt.

Thanks for the replys I take it that the bore is chrome lined so I only need to worry about fouling.

Henry says on their site that the more is also hard chromed. Hard chroming and chrome lining however might mean different things.
