Ruger makes great guns and I own a couple of them. I have an old 10/22 and a Mini 14. Lately though I have been disappointed in a couple I have handled. First, my brother bought a new 10/22 and I was bummed at all the plastic parts. My 10/22 has all steel parts including the trigger guard. Of course I bought it in 1977. Then I was looking at the new Wrangler and again, I was disappointed when I found out that opening the loading gate lets the cylinder freewheel, no indexing at all, it just sounds so wrong on a single action gun. Then the dealer told me that the grip frame was made of zinc alloy; I could handle aluminum alloy, but not zinc. Talk about going ultra cheap. Nope, I'll pass thank you.

Chuck, inexpensive- not “cheap”- is the whole idea. Ruger took the Single-Six, and figured out how to make one that they could sell for < $200 to compete with the Roughrider. A Single-Six costs more than $500- worth it, but more than a lot of buyers can or will spend on a .22 revolver.

In my opinion Ruger hit one out of the park with the Wrangler. They made a better gun than the Heritage for the same price.

Btw, the metal parts on your 10/22 that are now polymer on the newer ones are aluminum, not steel.

I didn't know that was a reason to have your head examined. I do the same.

I take it you do NOT own a .22 Cal Henry.

Actually I own 2, a Classic and a Golden Boy. Every thing I have read about them says the receivers are ALUMINUM alloy. That aside, the freewheeling cylinder is another dislike for me, I don't douby the Wrangler will turn out to be a nice gun for some folks, just not for me.

If this is the case it's probably Zamak which is what the Henry .22 receivers are made of.
Zamak contains aluminum but it's base metal is zinc.

As for 22 revolvers, I've owned 6 shot, 8 shot, 10 shot and, now, even a 12 shot in my Cattleman, but old traditional me still has a soft spot for the six shooter. Quality and accuracy are far more important to me.

I currently have a nine shot High Standard 'Sentinel'.
Kind of a unique older .22 pistol and are starting to get hard to find.

Mine is an early 6" R-103 variation and was given to me many years ago.
They were marketed under various 'store' names such as J.C Higgins/Ted Williams for Sears and Revelation for Western Auto.
The store name branded models with shorter barrels appear to be the most desirable.
It had been stored in a leather holster for a LONG TIME and the left side of the barrel had a lot of rust but with careful removal I was able to get it off and preserve most of the bluing. The right side of the barrel is near perfect.
I would recommend to anyone who might stumble on one of these grab it (if the price is right).
They have an aluminum frame but are very well made, solid little revolvers with a crisp action and a great trigger.

Mistered, I did a lot of research yesterday, and the receiver on my H001 Classic is indeed Zamak. The receiver on my Golden Boy however is aluminum alloy treated so it looks like brass, hence the name "brasslite"; I think that and what I had been told caused my confusion. I stand corrected. I still don't think I will get the Wrangler. I like the trditional characteristics of a Colt like gun. I'll stick with my Heritage Rough Rider.

I had a High Standard nine shot Sentinal in the '80s. It had a four inch barrel and the front sight ramp started at the edge of the frame and stopped at the muzzle. I sold it to help pay for a Colt Service Model Ace.

I still don't think I will get the Wrangler.

If I were wanting a SA .22 I'd hold out for a good, used Single Six.
The Wrangler is no doubt a winner for Ruger and has it's 'niche' but it's not for me either.

I have decided to hold out for a single 6 or 10. Just curious why you say " used "?

Well for a starter cost. I can find a used Single Six in the high twos, low threes around here.
Also I typically look for older, used guns for the potential higher quality and/or what I am looking for may no longer be available new.
Last but not least I don't seem to be as 'self conscious' of taking a used gun out to use. Not that I 'baby' the new ones I have had but it takes me longer to get over it with new than used.

I hear what you're saying Ed. All makes good sense. I have always just leaned toward new on just about anything if I can afford it though. From what I have seen, I don't think there would be any compromise in quality; old vs new on this one.
Ruger backs their guns also, like Henry.

I'm with Ed. There are so many used Single Sixes around you can et them at very affordable prices and I do agree that that the older vintages had better QC. Ruger was a different company when Bill Ruger was running the show. Not that you can find some great new production Single Sixes, but I prefer the vintage ones for sentimental reasons if nothing else. I can promise you, that my vintage Single Sixes do have better polish and bluing than any new production Singe Sixes you can buy, too.

What if my resources do not guide me to a used one. Does anyone have a problem with a NEW one? Really want some opinions.
Also ( even though I think this has been discussed somewhere ), why a six over a ten? Or Visa-Versa.
