Sept 1st, 1860

No big story today, just 1 little 8" target with 50 rounds on it through my 1860 Henry in 45 Colt. My reloads 6.7 gn of Universal with 250 gr LRNFP bullets.

Shooting 100 yds, from 1 knee position. No wind again today so I am able to zero in not too bad. I use my little binoculars to check on how I'm doing as I shoot. Once I saw the flyers around the edge I was able to correct it and at least get on the black target for the most part. Pulling left a bit which I tend to do. Couple of other guys there shooting bolt guns with scopes, so I guess they must think I'm nuts with open sights, but oh well.

nicely done, as usual .... you've fired as many or much more lead bullets through your rifle as anyone I know .... have you noticed much, if any, lead buildup in its barrel

An 8" target @ 100 yards is definitely leaning toward a bigger story, RR. The only thing that is "little" is the target way out there!! I wonder what the other fellows would think if they compared their targets with yours? If they were at all experienced shooters and good with their rifles, they probably should understand you are not nuts. You're the "kneeling iron man."

I clean the barrel quite often, every couple of sessions. There is lead, but after a couple of wet barrel mops and a patch or two I can get clean dry patches. The chamber gets dirty though, and needs to be cleaned out thoroughly. However, I popped the side plate on the toggle link action not too long ago and it was pretty darn clean in there. Just oiled it and put the cover back on.

Agreed, it is soooooo hard to judge and adjust at the that distance. I am really excited to try my new 1885 High Wall with a rear tang sight and see if I can actually get groups at 100+ yds. We'll see.

RR, I doubt very much that those guys with bolt guns and scopes think you're nuts. If anything, I suspect some of them are jealous, but I'll bet a lot more of them are just plain curious to see someone still shooting in the old way. So rare to see, anymore. Hold your head high, cowboy. That kind of shooting is a thing of beauty.

Yes, I do think a tang peep and set trigger on that 1885 will let you stretch out to 200 yards, no prob. Might want to develop some hotter loads, though, to flatten the trajectory and for sure, an 1885 can handle any kind of 45 Colt load.

That's interesting on the loads for the 1885....been looking at some loads for it already. I have loaded some 250 gr a little hotter and marked the box "1885 only".
