.22LR Winchester 9422

Post by Sir Henry » Fri Sep 22, 2017 2:14 pm

I have one in .22WMR and a 9410 and have always wanted one in LR. I saw one in a pawn shop today for $499 and am thinking about it. Any enablers in here?

I've got a 9422 XTR that I paid a lot more than $499 for - if that 9422 you're looking at is anything close to good condition, I think that's a great price - see if you can talk them down a little and go for it. You also may want to check out the 9422 asking prices on Gunbroker....

That's a very reasonable price for a standard 9422 in decent condition and would be a steal for an XTR. I rarely see any 9422 under $650 in our area and the last time I did see one under that figure, I bought it. :)

Check the barrel markings for a clue to the vintage or check the serial number. The early 22 LRs will be stamped 22 S-L-LR. This vintage used a separate, shorter receiver for the 22 LR and a longer receiver for the 22 mag. You can reliably shoot 22 Shorts in these guns. Mine is one of these early guns, made in 1976. (Every bit as accurate as our Marlins, by the way, and smoother to boot.)

In the later vintages, to cut costs, Winchester used one receiver size for both the 22 LR and the 22 mag versions, namely, the longer 22 Mag receiver. These will be marked 22 L-LR or sometimes 22 S-L-LR, but with S stamped over. These longer receiver versions cannot reliably feed 22 Shorts. Not a big deal, unless you plan to shoot 22 Shorts, but for me, still nice to have an early gun with a receiver made specifically to shoot the 22 LR. Nevertheless, for that price, would be hard for me to pass up one of the later guns.

Love 9422's.

Would like to get one myself one of these days.

The serial number is F441XXX and it is an XTR so it was made around 1980. I have a ton of shorts and do shoot them so that is important to me.

I'm also looking for a 9422. I'm pretty sure if I ran across a nice looking XTR for $499 I would buy it.
