Cowboy Gear
Re: Cowboy Gear
Very Interesting. The producers of Hollywood westerns don't seem to get it right always.

Re: Cowboy Gear
Some westerns that got it right as far as the period correct gear, saddles, guns, clothes, etc:
Lonesome Dove
Most Sam Elliot or Tom Selleck westerns; Conagher, Monte Walsh, Last Stand at Saber River, You Know My Name, Crossfire Trail
Tombstone
Wyatt Earp
Open Range
Broken Trail
Unforgiven
There's others but these ones nailed it.

Re: Cowboy Gear
Received my new Triple K scabbard today. It's 4" longer than the other one I have, but the same model #120 with suede lining. Here's some pics of my saddle with the scabbard mounted and the 1860 Henry in it. Almost every Henry rifle I've seen in photos, either historically or in movies this model of rifle is carried upside down. Now I know why. It is just too loose in the scabbard right side up, and could fall out. Upside down it cradles better and is balanced. Oh well, I prefer the look of right side up, but I would rather not leave it on the trail somewhere, so upside down it is.
I guess if it's good enough for the Texas Rangers, it's good enough for me.
I also added a lever wrap, jury is out on it right now....what do you folks think? I will not be adding a stock cover, I like the brass butt plate, again historic.
Enjoy the pics.

That's a nice set-up, beautiful scabbard. Nothing wrong with the rifle being in that way and as far as the lever wrap, to each his own. Personally, I am not a fan, never considered putting one on any of mine but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't.

Re: Cowboy Gear
I don't think I'll leave(r) it on, I think this model rifle is it's own unique beauty. Thanks.

Re: Cowboy Gear
RR I've never riden with a scabbard, the way you've got it mounted does it catch the brush or trees? I've seen em mounted the opposite direction as well with the stock in front of your leg. Any advantage one way or the other? Ever got you into a jackpot?

Oh and the rig looks good! Never ridden in a wade, what maker is it? I can see the stamp on the fender just can't blow it up enough to read it .

Re: Cowboy Gear
Agreed, leaving that 1860 on the Canadian trail is not a good way to go.
Your setup is quite nice/looks great. You sure made an excellent choice with this rifle and its beautiful wood stock.
The 1860 was made exactly for your purpose. Enjoy shooting it, too!
Whenever I again carry my SGC in my Quiver, I'll be reminded I've never even been on a horse yet.
