50amp 220volt to 30amp

Post by Sir Henry » Wed Jul 02, 2025 6:26 pm

My friend bought a new cookstove and discovered his wall outlet is different than the plug-in. Can he just get an adapter? I’ve found them on Amazon.

50 amps requires 6 gauge wire in copper and 4 gauge in aluminum wire. 30 amps require 8 to 10 gauge depending on distance. Wire to wall plug and breaker should be checked for wire size and breaker should be sized to the appliance requirement . Using adapters is a dangerous fix.
I should be able to plug a 30 amp into a 50 amp but not a 50 into a 30. My motor home will plug into anything and then I tell it what its plugged into.

The four pronged receptacle was done so that the third or neutral wire could no longer be used as a ground wire.Your friend should hire a licensed electrician to wire the stove the right way if he doesn't want to come home to a pile of ashes.

Adapting downward from 50A down to 30A is fine. RV and Camp trailer retailers sell adapter kits that have several types of step-down adapters, including one for what you are looking for.

I’ll be making sure the breaker is a 40 amp to complete this project.

I'm surprised the store the new stove was bought from didn't ask which power cord was needed. Last time I bought a stove they asked what outlet type we had and provided the power cord with the corresponding plug on the end of it.

It was a used stove. I put the new cord on and confirmed it was a 40 amp breaker.
