Here's one just for fun. I put the black top and bottom on it to get around the aspect ration issue posted images have on this forum.

I was standing on the dike between two retention ponds at Magnolia when this guy came rocketing by. I got the idea to make a composite image to make it look like he had an ACME rocket booster strapped to his tail.

That snake picture is incredible. Love the reflection of his/her jaw. (If a snake has a jaw that is ) When I expand the picture that critter is looking me right in the eye and has a lot of expression on the face. Especially the way the head is slightly tilted. Wonderful!

Made it out with the CNPA to Edisto Memorial Gardens this morning. Lots of pretty flowers. I don't often do flowers, so I was looking for insects. Not much activity there, except down around the water plants. Lots of dragonflies and a few bees. We had some good barbecue afterwards.

These first three, I had to shoot with my long lens. I didn't think they would appreciate me wading through the pond, and didn't want to go home with wet feet. Not a lot of light, so I couldn't get as much depth of field as I would have liked, but the lighting was nice and soft, and the plants added a lot of atmosphere.

These two I was able to take with my macro lens and flash setup. About 1 in 10 dragonflies will let you get pretty close. The rest fly off whenever you get within 5 or so feet.

DSC9070 is fantastic.

The Dragonfly appears to be looking directly into the lens (or into the eye of an Observer) as an Observer itself.

Your depth of field is so shallow, yet you managed to capture the fine lines in its face, the wing, and that beautiful, deep red flower that is popping just below the background glow of the other softly focused wing. Love it.

The Dragonfly appears to be looking directly into the lens (or into the eye of an Observer) as an Observer itself.

Actually, it's an illusion. They have compound eyes with almost 360 degrees of vision. Regardless of the position you look at them from, there is a dark spot that centers in your direction. It's not a pupil, but it looks a bit like one, and fools your brain to think they are looking straight at you. They call it a pseudopupil.
