Large yellow kitty

Post by Centaur » Sun Feb 23, 2025 6:50 pm

Heading out next weekend for a week of chasing a dry land mountain lion in NW Arizona. This will be a first for me; guide hunt on horseback, following lion hounds. I have done drop camp horseback hunts in the past, but this one will make me a total dude. Should be interesting to see the dogs work, and hopefully find a big tom. Will be taking my Henry Big Boy in 45 Colt with 250 grain handloads. I have only seen a handful of mountain lions in the wild, although I am pretty sure that many of them have seen me.
A different kind of hunt than I have been on before, hopefully I will come back with a large yellow kitty cat.

Good luck, don't know how often you ride, if not much or has been a good while.
If you'll be on one for any real length of time, expect to be a bit saddle sore. ;)
I haven't been on one in 9+ years now, we sold the last one 9 years ago this summer.

Vaquero,
I haven’t been on top of a horse in years, so I’m expecting that saddle soreness will be part of the equation. A small price to pay, I hope.

That sounds like a great hunt, good luck to you and the hounds.

30+ years ago Washington State eliminated hunting with hounds and the Cougar population has exploded. Another dumb decision by the state game dept.

Well I’m catless. A very hard physical hunt in some very rugged and unforgiving country. Dogs did tree one cat, but he jumped the tree before we could get there. Anyone that thinks that hunting with dogs is a pushover should have been along for the fun.
I am battered, a bit bloody, and very saddle sore. This isn’t a hunt for sissies.

Well, dang it, I hate to read that it slipped away on y'all.
Sure was hoping to read good story, I'm sure there is still one though.

Yep the saddle sores, makes my inner thighs ache just thinking about it.
But, we sure had a lot of good times riding.

Sounds like a great hunt. Never hunted with hounds but it sure doesn’t sound “easy”!
