A few Q's on the new Henry..
H012AW 44M/S
Can the bolt be easily removed for cleaning (i. e. without disassembling the receiver)? I thought prior to purchasing I had read that a simple removal of the lever would facilitate this. But couldn't make that happen when I tried. Hammer got in the way by this much.
Is there a bore guide available for this rifle?
Any special considerations for running lead?
Anybody wanna share some upper mid-ish 240gr lead loads for hogs?
Front sight is a direct dovetail (.375" base). What options for replacements/height adjustments with these?
Any Henry specific quirks I should be aware of prior to loading/shooting?
I've shot it once out at my back door chronograph station but that's just a few yards for load checking here at the house. It made quite the impressive spray of clay and mulch with a factory Federal 240(1720fps, BTW). Didn't wanna pop off any more of those as I plan to run coated lead barring any reason why I shouldn't. Thanks, much. d:^) Schneeks..

Hey Schneeky - that bolt should come out with the lever out - did you pull the hammer all the way down when you tried it? Got me curious - I'll go try it on our H012AW.
Just tried it - had to hold the hammer all the way down and the bolt slid right out....

I was pretty sure I did. But mebbe I was limp-wristing it since it's new and all.
FWIW it's also a Gen2. Not really sure what that actually means. d:^) Schneeks..

Not really sure what Gen2 is either, but ours is about 1 yr old - probably same as yours - except it still has the rubber buttpad on.....

Quote from an eBay ad:
Usually a purchase is researched ad nauseum if it's something new to me. But this one was tripped over in one of Momma's buying moods and it was sortofa quick decision.
It's really tempting to break out the files again
. But I'm hoping I'm just being ignorant so thougtht I'd ask. It's only a few thousandths from being easier access.
Here's what I see:
Not sure how it translates to an H012. And at Bud's they say it's "September 2011 and later". Other entries seem to suggest the difference may be the factory tapping for scope mounts.Note: Henry 2nd Generation Big Boy Rifles start with the following serial numbers; H006 = BB004722, H006M = BB0015530M, H006C = BB0021188C

Re: A few Q's on the new Henry..
That's kind of a bummer - I'd say go with the files and take a little off the top of the hammer, but if you do, you'll probably file off the silver coating. Maybe you can get by with just filing a shallow "groove" on the hammer to squeak that bolt by...

Hmmmm. That's weird. Does it look exactly like the pic I took of mine in that position?tractortad wrote:Just tried it - had to hold the hammer all the way down and the bolt slid right out....
Or did I get somethin' "special" again?

Re: A few Q's on the new Henry..
It looks like your pic, but there's about 1/32" gap between the bolt and hammer when I hold the hammer all the way back, so the bolt slides right on out. I think you may something "special" there... We've got a BBS 44 Carbine that's kind of like that - the bolt doesn't come out all the way - I'll probably end up filing the hammer a bit.

Re: A few Q's on the new Henry..
Could I bother you to take a pic of yours in the same position as mine is? Henry TS wants me to send it in for a look-see, but I've got hoggin ta do for another month or so. I'd much rather just swap out a part here if I did indeed get something "special". Thanks. d:^) Schneeks..tractortad wrote:It looks like your pic, but there's about 1/32" gap between the bolt and hammer when I hold the hammer all the way back, so the bolt slides right on out.

Thankyasir! I'm at a loss. Looks the same as mine, best I can tell.
Cept mebbe you have a flat on top of your bolt?
And izzat a coupla holes in the top of the bolt?
A real head scratcher.
On a side note, the folks at Henry have been great to deal with thus far. Tipothehat to'em! d:^) Schneeks..

My bolt is round on top - same as yours. Are you really taking that 44Mag out to hunt hogs?

Re: A few Q's on the new Henry..
Oh yeah. It's mostly short range and sows aren't hard ta kill. Boars neither if ya have any proficiency at all with a firearm. I've been nailin'em no problems with 125gr SST's around 2800fpsmv outta the SCAR. I just want something a bit "handier" and don't care for the way rifle bullets come apart at higher velocities (although 2800fps ain't exactly hot-roddin).tractortad wrote:My bolt is round on top - same as yours. Figgered to try chuckin a bigger hunk'o'lead slower for good penetration and hopefully the hard 240's I have on order from Missouri hold together better. I spit out some lead from a sausage patty a few days ago and my household RN freaked. So I had an "in" for a new rifle. (Never let an opportunity goto waste.)
Thanks much for your assistance! d;^)

Re: A few Q's on the new Henry..
Cool - that 44Mag oughta wake up those hogs - great use for an all weather Henry. I bet you don't even need a hard 240 to drop a hog - even factory hollow points hit pretty dang hard. As much as I'd love to hunt hogs with ours, I'm kind of glad they haven't made it this far north - those things are nasty to anything that grows on a farm...
Re: A few Q's on the new Henry..
My 357 Steel also does this. Another member posted a good tip. Wrap a Velcro strap around the grip and the hammer spur. It works very well. Good luck.

I am thinking the bolt got in the receiver somehow. Have you heard back from Henry yet? You should not have to modify the hammer to take the bolt out.

Re: A few Q's on the new Henry..
Hey GFK, yup, they called me back today after talkin with me right about COB yesterday. Great CS and they've been great to work with thus far. Quick with email and phone responses.
Thanks much for the input, fellas. I pulled the screws for the AitH rail just ta make sure they weren't binding the bolt. No dice.
Codfisher- I ain't grabbin'em just yet. Still bein under warranty and all. But the thought has definitely crossed my mind.
Tractortad-They ain't good for nothin cept killin and eatin. The paper company even pays guys to trap'em.
JEBar- I must be the lucky one. Hehehe. Least it still shoots and I can knock out the big chunks with a bore snake till we figure it out. I really hope somebody makes a bore guide for it. But it shouldn't be a big deal with a straight walled case if I need to twist one up. d:^) Schneeks..
