Scoping a .308 Long Ranger.....

Will be buying a .308 Long Ranger in the weeks ahead.

It'll be a hunting rifle for deer & hogs.
It's my first lever action gun, but not my first .308.

I think this will be a really handy rifle on longer walks and on hunts where I use a climbing stand, too. Most of the spots I'd likely be in are heavily wooded....tall timber makes for diminished daylight in some spots. Almost all shots would be well under 200 yards.

I tend to buy larger objective scopes on my bolt guns but something just makes me cringe when I consider going this route yet again. The lines on this gun scream for something different.

I'm interested in what you'e scoped yours with and how it's working out for you.

I think that unless your targets will be more than 100 yards away, the largest scope I would look at would be a 3-9x40. I'd be more inclined, though, to look at 2-7x scopes. Probably Leupold, either VX1 or VX2. A scope like that will look good on a Long Ranger, and works really well for distances out to 100.

I tend to favor the 1-4 and 1-5 Leupold straight tube scopes on my lever guns to not upset the balance to much. I think some one does make a straight tube in 1-6X. I also like the Leupold 2-7 scopes and I have no second thoughts on deer size game or coyotes at 200 yds. I seldom have a shot over a 125 yds. I think they still look good on a lever if you go with one close to the compact size scopes with a 28-32MM objective. YMMV.

Though it's a lever action, I think the LR would look good with any scope, and be quite functional.

Problem is, there are so many great scopes out there it's hard to decide.

as can be seen below, Henry's Long Ranger looks very much like our Browning BLR .... beyond looks, they share some design features which include a locking bolt .... while as has been noted there are several good ones available, I use Nikon scopes .... you've given your anticipated shooting range to being in heavy woods out to 200 yards .... that pretty much echos our use for our Browing .... I like the Nikon's PROSTAFF 5 2.5-10X50 .... the 2.5 setting is great of close work and the 10 magnification does well at longer ranges .... Nikon scopes do well in low light conditions

thank you .... as best I can recall she was made in Belgium in 1969 .... she'll never have wood as pretty as what I've seen on many Henry rifles and she's earned every blemish .... with our handloads using 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips I have had 5 shot, interlocking groups at 100 yards .... even if she never fires another round (that's a terrible thought ), she will be on passed down through the family .... over time I've earned great respect for a 308 from seeing her perform

I have a Burris Veracity 2-10x42 on my Savage .308, I used Burris Signature rings for a secure mount to a steel picatinny rail.
