Shot the rifle with the skinner express rear and stock front sight and it worked out great with loads in the 1300-1400 Fps range. The 350grn hornady fp with 45.2 gr of 3031 did excellent with 2.00 to 2.5 inches at 100 yds. At 100 using a 2 inch shoot and see target front sight just covered it and all hits were on the target and at 50 yds used a 6 o'clock hold and all hits were on target. I'll try 325 gn lever revolution next and a load at 1800-1900 Fps using the same hornady bullet to see how that works. The 405 gn lasercast with 38.5 gn of 3031 was ok but the groups were about 4 inches at 100 so maybe a different powder will be next for that. Overall this is one nice levergun and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Could you post some pics of the rifle. Interested to see what sort of coloration you ended up with on your receiver and forend cap

rdrcr56, give H4198, or the IMR version a try. I think you will like them & you can get your desired velocities with them.

I'm using a light load with the Rem. 405gr SP & 33grs H4198, it gives me just over 1400fps. It is very fun & accurate in my rifle.

Frank V I tried some 4198 and it seems like my rifle doesn't care for it with the 350 gn hornady. I tried loads from 1400 to 1800 Fps and groups were pretty big. All the loads with 3031 were in the 2 inch range at 100 yards and consistent left to right, 53 gr is the hunting load and 45.2 to 48 will be the range load. The 53 gr load shoots about 6 inches higher than the 45.2 gn load so I think I will stick with 3031. The funny thing is my Marlin guide gun likes the 4198 way more than the henry

If you have any reloader 7 you might give that a try. I know my 38-55 loves reloader 7. I will know soon if the 45-70 CCH likes it my rifle will be here tomorrow. :D

Sorry it didn't work out, but our rifles will tell us what they like & we should feed them what they like.
The Henry .45-70s I've seen sure look nice, maybe one day????

No problem, thanks for the recommendation, I think I'll try some h4895 next, it would be nice to be to be able to find one load that works in everything but worst case is different loads for different rifles

Well I cant seem to get the photos to work Ive tried 2 different sights photopuke and this postiimage site. But anyway here is a link to a target I shot today 50 yards off the bags. The load is Winchester brass and LRP with a 350gr Hornady bullet. The powder I used is Reloader 7. This is the powder of my choice for the 38-55 and the 45-70. I used 47 grains in this load. Use at your own risk I take no responsibility for the load in your gun. I think this will be my hunting load. I love this 45-70. Al
