What did you do at your reloading bench today?

Hmmm, can't honestly say I had thought of that, but may come to that, LOL.
Found some Starline 45/70 brass on Huntington Die Specialities website. Called them, they are out of stock. Talked to a very nice lady there, she said she would call if they got any in. Holding my breath & turning purple as I type, LOL.

Got 100 pcs 45/70 Starline brass trimmed. deburred & wet tumbled today. Ready for primers.
Been taking it a bit easy today. Had an accident Mon. evening while watering some flowers. Tripped over some concrete edging & fell backwards. Tore my left shoe off, dug a chink of hide off the top of my left instep, landed on my butt, bruised my left hip. Of course, first thing I did was look to see if anyone had their camera catching it. They didn't, LOL. Hip has been rather sore, but this AM about 6:30, pain in my left foot where that hide was torn, decided to make an appearance. It was rough, teeth gritting rough. Finally got
up, washed it down with Hydrogen Peroxcide, put some Polysporin on it & a large Bandaid. Pain still hitting every few minutes. Finally took a pain pill & it calmed down.....so far. I think I'm getting too old to water flowers. ( feel free to laugh if you must ).

Haven't done anything at mine in a while, well except eat a meal or two there.

When I get thru with this batch of 45/70, my bench is going to be quiet for quite a while, unless some more brass shows up, which
ain't likely. I've got feelers out from coast to coast; nothing in sight.

I've got plenty of stuff that could be loaded, but
haven't been shooting that much so I don't see any need in it.
Besides if something were to happen to me, it would be a lot easier for the misses to sell the supplies vs the loaded ammo.

Yesterday I drug out a box of 38-55 supplies that I bought last year.
Couldn't remember what all was in it, I know.
Well there was 140 primed brass in there also.
And another 44 pcs. of brass which I deprimed and threw those in the wet tumbler.
Probably set the dies up later today.

Getting ready for an incoming rifle.

A local guy put these three boxes of 41 XTP’s up for sale at $37 a box and I managed to grab them before anybody else did. Not the best price out there but it seems like that’s what I paid last time I bought some at a store. I have another two boxes pending a trade with a guy who lives about three hours away. Fortunately he has a daughter who lives in Spokane that he will be visiting and we plan to meet up when he does so. (He’s busy planting now so this will have to wait).

Short or long brass Randy. You will also probably find that you will need the bullets sized at .379 to .380. Might want to check your expander plug to make sure it will expand that far

Well it seems as I have both, the primed brass measure 2.12 and the other 44 are 2.07.

Tried to load some 9mm Luger rounds today. Got off to a bad start and had a real hard time adjusting the powder drop on the RCBS progressive press. (This is my small primer progressive press.) I had to switch this press from loading 357 Mag. Well after killing an hour I got things set the way I wanted and proceeded to fill the primer tube. Soon as I went to turn the primer tube up to put it on the press I dumped 100 primers all over the place. Some dummy forgot to check for the clip pin that seals the open primer tube end. Spent the next 30 minutes on my hands and knees picking up primers. Found all but one.

Finally ready to begin loading 9mm after I set the powder drop to the right amount. Put a single case into the press and ran the ram to the top for decapping and sizing. I could hear the spent primer pop out and drop into the catch jar. As I went to pull the case down I heard a loud snap. I looked at the press I could see the 5 station shell plate hanging below the dies with the shell firmly caught in the sizing die.

My first thought was the shell plate broke. After a little examination the shell plate was fine, but the shoulder bolt the holds it to the ram broke. So after another 30 minuted of careful disassembly I was able to free the shell plate, but the case was firmly stuck in the sizing die. I removed the decapping pin and was able to drive the stuck case from the die with a brass rod.

So over 2 hours wasted and not a single round of 9mm to show for it. It will be Tuesday before I can call RCBS and get a replacement shoulder bolt which will probably take a week to get to me.

Not sure what cause the problem. The case went into the die the with normal resistance. Have I been over torquing the shoulder bolt? Or is this just a weak design failure point? I've been using this press for 25 years without issue. Up until 8 years ago this was my only progressive press for loading pistol ammunition in 9mm, 38 spl. 40 S&W and 45 ACP. I added a second progressive press (for larger primers) when I bought a lightly used Hornady Lock N Load for cheap. I've always have and still load rifle ammo on my single stage press.

Whatever caused the bolt to fail, this press is down for the near term until replacement parts show up.
