Frontier .50 Feb 27th, early 1800's

Post by RanchRoper » Sat Feb 27, 2021 11:11 pm

Gorgeous day at the range today! NO WIND. Sunshine and 25F. Time to make smoke!!

My Pedersoli Frontier .50 caliber. .490 patched lead ball. 55 grains of Triple 7 powder.

After my frustration of trying to get on target with the original front sight, then changing the rear sight to a ladder one (which bugged me cuz it was not correct to the period of the rifle), then changed it back to the original fixed buckhorn, and then finally last weekend filing the front sight down.....I have a shooter!!!!!! :D

I am trying to shoot it standing up all the time, off hand like the black powder folks do in the videos. Because it's only 7 lbs, and well balanced it shoots quite well like this.

50 yds, off hand on a 6" target

100 yds, OFF HAND! 12" target, I stuck it to some white cardboard so I could see any misses, but actually got them on the circle mostly. I could not believe how well it shoots. Love it. Lots of work to do at 100 yds but it's a start. Just happy to get on the target today.

Thanks for sharing. That is some remarkable shooting especially with a buckhorn sight. Your practice is paying off.

Fantastic results especially that 50 yd. target! Long barrel helps make it happen plus a very good trigger puller!

Another great example of marksmanship. Thanks, RR.

Yes, that Frontier has an excellent trigger, as do so many BP rifles with those set trigger setups. Back when I was shooting a TC Hawkens, loved the set trigger.

Nice shooting RR. 100 yard target would get you one of those elk you took a pic of the other day. Glad you are having a great time with that smoke pole they are really alot of fun.

Great shooting at both distances but I have to say my feet are just a little bit cold seeing your feet in what I think are rawhide boots in the snow. :D Great pics, always fun to see your setup.

That's some good shootin' RR. Good to see somebody doing some shooting. Weather's got my back to the wall again, LOL

Dang fine marksmanship!

I want to be a rifleman like you when I grow up. Problem is, I only seem to be growing "out" lately 😁.
