.223 Single shot

I haven't shot the .223 Henry H015 lately so I headed to the range with some old leftover prairie dog loads. We have a few swingers up behind the 200 yard targets so the distance is about 215 yards. The smallest steel plate is 4" in diameter. I used just a front rest attempting to duplicate field conditions and it was gratifying to repeatedly slap that 4" plate. The load was 40 gr. Vmax's at just short of 3600 fps. Scope is an old Leupold 2-7 set at 7 power. I was too lazy to walk down there and snap a pic on the freshly painted plate. The .223 is the one on the left. I believe that little bugger would print groups of 2" or less at that distance using a good rest and playing the wind. Outstanding for a break action single shot. :D

Sounds like some fun shooting.
And great results from a not-so-heavy looking barrel, and a screaming fast, light bullet load.
I'll bet that one does some serious damage to the PDs.

Nice furniture on that metal and fantastic shooting.

A SS caliber I have come close to getting several times but not much PD shooting available around Colorado anymore. If and when I do get a chance a 243 awaits in the safe. Nice SS 4shot :D

Nice shooting and as you know .223 can be an extremely accurate caliber when hand loaded. I used to shoot one at 600 yards and unless the wind was blowing it was very accurate. Unfortunately that little bullet gets moved around by the wind quite a bit.

That’s an impressive display of rifles.

Great shooting. Yeah, single shots rule in my book. My 223 single shot is a Winchester/Miroku Low Wall.

The V-max loads were worked up for a custom and rebarreled Rem 700 and I suspect the 22" barrel on the Henry gives up 50 to 75 fps. The single shot is quite accurate with other loads but it really shines with the 40's. Prairie dog disassembly with this load is impressive.
