Whatcha got there?

Post by Yornoc3 » Fri Mar 08, 2019 10:56 am

This is a good place for a "whatcha got there?" (as in when you go to shoot at the Sportsman's club) thread. I have always had sort of a thing for single shots, probably since my first real gun was a H&R topper .410, followed by a H&R 30-30 with an interchangeable 20 ga. barrel. They're no longer around, and I've been replacing them ever since ;) .

So my list of single shots not made by Henry reads as follows:
New model Savage favorite .22.
Mossberg SSI One .270
Mossberg SSI One 12 ga. Turkey gun. I refer to it as a musket, for sure it's not truly a shotgun.
Ruger #1-A 7mm Mauser
CZ Brno Effect .308

And of course there's the Henry 45-70, Henry .243, and Henry 30-30. I think I see a trend developing :) .

I bought a new Ruger #1B in 7mm RemMag about 1977. I took my first elk with it. Its now on its 3rd barrel.

My one and only SS rifle is an NEF Handi-Rifle in .223.
I highly recommend to anyone interested in them to keep an eye out for one in a ‘key’ caliber (.357, .44 30-30, and some select .22 centerfires) and don’t hesitate if the price is right. A bonus would be for the wood stocked models with the laminated ones being the most deseriable but I’d probably even buy if it were a composite stock (I am sure a wood replacement can be found)
Had I known Remington was going to drop the NEF line I would have bought a rack full of them previously!

For rifles, in my time have had Contenders, Encores, Low Wall, High Walls, Ruger No. 1 and 3s, a wide variety of vintage Winchester, Remington, Mossberg, Savage/Stevens single shot rimfires, even an old Ithaca Model 49 22 LR (neat little gun).

Single shot shotguns of by Savage/Stevens, Sears, and, my favorites, some very nice Winchester 37s.

Last but not least, most of our CZ rifles wear single shot adapters.

I always meant to buy a Handi rifle or two, but never got around to it. Big mistake. Going to try not to make the same mistake with the Henry single shots.

Sharps Cavalry Carbine in 45-70. Of all my guns (have a few) this and my Henry H001 are the two I couldn't part with.
