22Plinkster 45-70 Vid

Post by ESquared » Fri Mar 15, 2019 2:51 pm

If I could delete it, I would. As I've listened to others comment, it now strikes me as sophomoric and irresponsible.

HOWEVER, there's also some good discussion about some regional get-togethers of members, just food for thought. Skip the video and scroll down to that...

Maybe we Henryites could get together regionally and do this!

Creative destruction.

:D he shoulda used FMJ rounds instead of hollow points. I wonder how many cans those would have poked through.

I like the idea of a regional gathering of forum folks. Would a "Region" be CO, KS, NE, MO....? Wonder how our membership is distributed by state? Anybody in a position to know that could tell us if that data is even out there?

It would be fun to arrange a gathering. We might have to watch out for big Al...lol. But seriously, it would be awesome to gather together.

I am open to travel. East central Ne.

Members are not required to provide a location in their profiles and quite a few of us choose not to. The simple answer to the question is "NO", it is not available.

Okay, if the answer is "No," to my question, maybe we should revisit what triggered that question, which is the exchange above about some sort of "regional" gathering, which is an idea I've batted around with others before.

To begin to even think about organizing such a thing, the biggest challenge would be to try to segment the members with some sort of logical geographic boundaries so that such gatherings could at least be talked about amongst those members.

so, even if the answer is "No, we can't (or won't) extract the data we have," how hard would it be to create such a database on a voluntary basis from those members who would care to share it, for the express purpose of organizing (or trying to organize) in-person, regional get-togethers of members?

Maybe we're not big enough and too geographically dispersed to have any sort of critical mass, even regionally, but it would be interesting to explore, wouldn't it?

I think a fair number would respond, without giving personal info, to a regional invite. We would just have to set a place and time. Anyone in range would be free to attend.

I, personally, would be honored to meet some of my fellow shooters.

.
Maybe a simple brute method would be to create a few topics regionally titled. For example "Regional Get Together in the Central Plains" and another example "Regional Get Together in the Pacific Northwest".

If the plan is to shoot paint and foam cans and other junk, going to need to find private property to do it. Shooting on public lands: manufactured targets and homemade paper only.

I guess that would be up to the organizers of the regional gatherings, all part of the WHO?/WHERE?/WHAT?/WHEN? of such an endeavor. The Shoot in the NW would probably be different than one in the NE or Plains or wherever.

I just thought that having membership by state would be a good starting point for organizing the "Regions" so it would be easier to even begin such conversations...

Evan, I think we would have to pursue this privately. Until we had a plan to announce publicly.

No hurry, just something to consider. Thanks for the support.

It always fun to meetup with people who are members of a forum of a common interest.
I have met many of the members of a PNW based firearm forum I am a member of - with several in my local area and have gotten together to shoot with many of them.
On a side note I cannot say I find it particularly interesting to watch someone shoot at cans of toxic substances. I guess if it is on his private property then it is his choice but growing up in an area as I have (with vast amounts of public land) it has been a lifelong challenge of having to deal with seeing areas of trash and other junk in public areas that have been shot up and left.
I have also seen formerly open areas closed due to the irresponsible shooting of bottles, cans and other junk and left on the ground.
In Oregon it is illegal to shoot at anything (on public land) that is toxic, or leaves any shards of residue or broken peices such as glass.
Shooting for me has always been a way of life, and not a 'novelty' as it is for some and because of this I (as well as others) have always tried to promote responsible target choices when shooting on public land and ensuring all trash we create is picked up - and some extra we didn't to help the cause.
I have a unique shooting environment in that I can be in a fairly remote area literally minutes from home and want it to stay this way.
There are plenty of target options availabe that are challenging and fun to shoot at yet leave no trace or any refuse or material that is not easily cleaned up.

Agreed. Lots of moving pieces and parts to this one. Happy to help if there's any energy around it!

Agreed about that, too! The vid that started all this is really not all that smart and certainly not exemplary on many levels, is it?

So, if we ever get around to organizing Regional Shoots, I'd advocate for a "No Shooting Toxic Substances" rule, and your "Leave No Trace" is a good idea, not matter where the gathering might be held.

Yep - this might be a foreign concept for those who do not have the opportunity to shoot on public land but for those of us who do we take it pretty seriously.

Technically yes - but then way too many have used it as a 'detonator' attached to larger amounts of dangerous materials such as propane tanks, gas cans etc. - and in Oregon it is now illegal on public land.
