Is it safe to fire 300 gr. 45-70 ammo in the Henry 47-70 lever action rifle?

If you're referring to standard factory ammunition, for sure it is. There are a lot of options with 45-70 loads, and some handloads (those nipping at the heels of a .458 Win.) are suited only for a stronger action, like a Ruger #1. Both Henry and Marlin lever actions are strong enough to handle some pretty stout loads, though. One of those things you need to verify, first.

We usually shoot Winchester 300g JHP out of our Henry 45-70's - we get it at Walmart for about $32/box of 20. It performs well for us.

I admit I don't know much about rifles but I have never seen or heard of a 47-70 rile or ammo..

Should I have a concern, with the plastic tip on the projectile of a Hornady FTX, resting on a hot primer in a tube feed system?

first, welcome to our forum, happy to have you join us .... do hope you will feel free to read and post often, to participate in ongoing threads; as well as, to start others of your own .... you haven't mentioned if you currently own any Henry rifles ... if so, please take a look at our How Many ? thread (link below) and add them to our community's total .... as to the use of any Hornady (or those of any other major brand) bullets, they should be safe for use in the firearms for which they are marketed

Ive used the Hornady in mine with no issues. I found them to be very accurate in the AW 45-70 I have. However if you plan to reload you need to adjust for there brass as its shorter than the other 45-70 brass. I tend not to reload that brass at all.

That’s exactly what it was designed for. No issue whatsoever. It’s called “LeverEvolution” for a reason.

I found it to be slightly less friendly to shoot the 325 grain Hornady FTX over heavier weight bullets. The best I’ve found as far as shooting lots is the Remington 405 grain trapdoor safe rounds.

I sent Henry Customer Service a question about what .45-70 factory loads are acceptable. The reply:

"Our .45-70 rifles all fall into the 1895/modern lever category for action strength.
However, please note that we cannot advise on handloads and encourage the use of factory ammo only."

I followed up with a question about +P and "dangerous game" factory rounds. The reply:

"You’d need to confirm with the ammo maker that they are loading to 1895 levels.
If so, it’s a “go.” "

Been around since 1873...and no doubt more popular today than it was 50 years ago.

I credit Ruger with the revival...when they chambered their great No.1 Falling Block single shot for this grand old lady.

Marlin followed suit and the rest is history!
