I don't have my BB .44 mag a week and I'm already looking at a 45/70. I've owned a number of 45/70 rifles over the years, several different Marlin 1895s, a H&R Buffalo Classic and a H&R carbine, which I still have. That Henry 45/70 is definitely calling my name. The big question is which one. I think the blued version would fit me best. I learned to appreciate a recoil pad after owning the Buffalo Classic which had a steel butt plate. That sucker would cut your shoulder shooting Marlin level 45/70 loads off the bench. I ended up adding a 8" piece of 3/4" copper pipe filled with lead to the stock, just to help tame the recoil. I have an old fixed power Leupold 3X M8 or an even older Bushnell Scope Chief fixed power 2.5X with a post and crosshair reticle, either of which would go real nice on a Henry.

Been my experience shooting the 45-70 from the bench, too, especially with guns that have a traditional crescent steel butt plate. Not fun. Have really come to appreciate a slip on recoil pad.

Just over a year ago I won a Henry H010 45-70 in a raffle. In that time it has become my favorite of several center fire rifles. The power of this round must be experienced to be truly believed. At over 140 years old this round is going strong as ever. With the right loads it will take any animal on Earth with the exception of T-Rex. Get one-you'll love it!

your experience with the recoil of a 45-70 is well understood .... I have been on blood thinners for about 2 years and there is no chance of getting off of them for any time soon .... for me, harsh recoil equals deep bruising .... consequently, our 45-70 (and other big recoil rifles) has undergone a series of upgrades designed to reduce felt recoil .... much of the process (installing a top quality Kickeez recoil pad, Mercury recoil suppressor, and Mag-na-porting) can be found in this thread ===> http://henryrifleforums.com/viewtopic.p ... ag+na+port<=== that combo has transformed ours into a rifle that is fun to fire from a sandbag rest .... for anyone who has experience with the recoil of a 45-70, that speaks volumes

The Marlin 45-70 carbine is featured in the Jurassic World, the forth in the Jurassic Park series. Chris Pratt of Guardians of the Galaxy fame carries one and shoots the new dino villan a lot with it. Just makes it mad. His love interest is Ron Howards daughter.. Bryce Dallas Howard.. pretty good movie if you like the series... number five comes out in 2018.

Hate to give you some more bad influence, but try to get your hands on a Henry Color Case Hardened 45-70 (H010CC). We have a few 45-70's (Marlin 1895, Winchester 1885, H&R Buffalo Classic) and the Henry is the hands down favorite whenever we feel the need for some 45-70 "power-plinking". It is a beautifully made, big, heavy, smooth cycling, straight shooting, octagon barreled work of art. The recoil is definitely manageable because it weighs almost 10lbs (loaded) and it has an excellent recoil pad. Probably not so good for hunting because of the weight and the fear of scratching the nice walnut fruniture, but it is one really nice rifle - definitely our favorite Henry...

Well I certainly didn't expect to be talked out of buying a Henry, not here anyway. I did pick up two other lever actions, of a sort, this past month. Both Ruger Number 1 rifles, one in .30/06 and the other in .280 Rem. Cabelas has them on sale for $799 and I just couldn't shake the itch. No one talked me out of those either. LOL!!

Okay that's it, I could only stand so much arm twisting so I cried uncle and put a H010 steel 45/70 on layaway. I was also looking at the steel wildlife edition with the engraved receiver and gold inlays for another $400, but I think I'd commit blasphemy if I were to put a scope on that beautiful rifle.

The brass receiver is heavier. I'm thinking that is a good thing for the .45-70.

with a 45-70 heavier is a good thing .... however, the brass models don't come with a recoil pad ..... when it comes to recoil, that ain't a good thing

I'd be shooting cowboy loads anyway. Doesn't the case color model have a steel butt as well?

I bet the all weather model would fit the ticket for heavy loads. I picked one up a couple weeks ago and was unexpectedly pleased. They are pretty.

Recoil pad or not, those CCHs are pretty.

Would the CCH be a good rifle to take in the brush hunting or would the other 45-70’s be better. I question this because the single shot and the CCH have a longer barrel for more reach. but the SS is shorter over all. How far can one shoot with then 18” barrel? If you could have only one which one would it be?

I have no doubt that both are capable of far better accuracy than I am .... if I planned to hunt with open sights in thick brush where short range shots are the norm, I'd go with the shorter barrel Henry .... if longer shots (for me 40 or more yards) and/or I planned to mount a scope I'd go with a longer barrel .... by the way, that's exactly the choice I made ....

I hunt with a Sharps 45-70, 32" barrel, I can still ring the gong at 500 yards with the open sights. I own a Henry Frontier with the he long barrel. The next gun I buy will be a Winchester or Browning, 1886 in 45-70. Classic lever gun, top ejection from one of the strongest actions ever made. Don't get me wrong I love Henrys, but this Winchester has captured my heart. Action is very slick too.

Well, ok!

Took your advice and just added a H010CC to my H010. It just shipped this morning to my FFL.

This is my 4th 45-70 (also have owned 2 Ruger No 1 so chambered). I guess next I need to buy a 45-70 Wildlife Edition!
